Part of the fun of this particular vacation is meandering along the Mother Road.
Even though US Highway 66 was decommissioned in 1985, it still holds a place in the hearts of millions of Americans. Long before the interstate highway system, Route 66 was the main thoroughfare from Chicago to L.A.
It inspired a song, a TV series, and countless dreams and trips.
So, anytime I’ve been near a section of historic Route 66 I’ve taken a drive along the Mother Road.
The signs pictured here are from Springfield, Missouri and Oklahoma City...and we all know “Oklahoma City looks oh so pretty”!
So many versions of this song...how about Chuck Berry (who was from St. Louie)!
Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

It went through small towns and was two-lane in places. Big interstates are 4-6 lanes and bypass all the 20-MPH town squares....which is sad when you think about it. I usually spend half my vacation OFF the interstate.

@FourWalls They built bypass roads in Ireland but now some of the little villages struggle I think for custom and tourist dollars.

@JudyEv — exactly what happened along Route 66. Many of the places that existed as tourist stops along the route are ghost towns now. There are lots of videos on You Tube of people exploring the forgotten areas, especially in the western area (California, Arizona, New Mexico).

We traveled along a part of Route 66 many years ago. It was a fun trip.
