Sometimes this news shocks you, and sometimes it doesn’t. Every song starts with a songwriter, and sometimes a big hit starts long before it becomes a big hit. Here’s another song that you may not know was a cover. #6: Every Time You Go Away There was a Paul Young explosion in the 80s (kind of like Mick Jones in the 70s: the guitarists for the Clash and Foreigner were both named Mick Jones). The vocalist for Mike Rutherford’s Genesis spin-off band Mike + the Mechanics was named Paul Young (he passed away in 2000). And there was the Paul Young (still living) who had the big hit with “Every Time You Go Away.” It was #1 on the Billboard charts and in Canada, being certified a “gold” single. The dirty thief. Five years before Young’s big hit, the guy who wrote it recorded it. That fella was a struggling songwriter you probably have never heard of: Daryl Hall. Hall and Oates’ version of the song was an album cut, not a single. Paul Young heard it and put a penny or two in Daryl Hall’s coffers with his rendition. Every Time You Go Away Written by Daryl Hall Originally recorded by Daryl Hall & John Oates, 1980 Famously covered by Paul Young, 1985 The Hall & Oates rendition:

Don't think I know this. The title made me think of Ain't No Sunshine When She's Gone.

First I've heard of Paul Young but I do remember Daryl. Funny how a singer songwriter can put a song out there and it bombs then years later someone else does the song and it flies.
