Tea time! Yes, it’s cooling down here in the Ohio Valley, which means I need warm beverages to unthaw my hands. (Life with Reynaud’s....the “syndrome” isn’t anything other than a nuisance, while the “phenomenon” is associated with an underlying disease like diabetes.) You aren’t here to hear that, you want another song! Here’s one you know but you might not know was a cover.
#4: Some Guys Have All the Luck
Ah, that wacky Rod Stewart. A guy I play golf with made a comment (when one of Rod’s songs played on the piped-in music) that he didn’t care all that much for Rod’s music; however, he had a girlfriend who saw Stewart’s music as an aphrodisiac. “Anytime I heard Rod,” he said, “I knew I was getting laid.”
Rod probably had that syndrome, too, if you look at all the trophy girlfriends/wives he had. So it’s kind of hollow to hear him singing a song with the title “Some Guys Have All the Luck.” A lot of guys were probably wrinkling their nose at the thought of Rod’s “bad luck” with women. Meanwhile, some others were going, “Hey, didn’t Robert Palmer have the same luck a few years ago?” Yep. Palmer (another one who probably didn’t have much failure in the love department) released the song as a single in 1982 from his Maybe It’s Live album.
But the song goes back further (or it wouldn’t be on this list, right?
).
In 1973, the R&B group the Persuaders (no relation to the Tony Curtis/Roger Moore TV series The Persuaders!) recorded the song. While their best-known song, “Thin Line Between Love and Hate” (later covered by the Pretenders), was a massive, gold-record hit, their rendition of “Some Guys Have All the Luck” barely cracked the top 40.
Some bands have all the luck, too.

Famously covered by Robert Palmer, 1982
Also famously covered by Rod Stewart, 1984
The original version from the US soul group:

Swoon. I love Robert Palmer. So sad he's gone. Went to one of his concerts. Fabulous. Remember the Rod Stewart version.
