350 photos later and we're home again

We’ve been away at a West Australian endurance ride. We only stayed the one night. It was cold and a bit bleak but luckily we’d finished our photographing before the rain hit. Most of the riders made it home before the rain but some would have got wet I think. I made a vow last ride that this time I’d wear my rubber boots but of course, I forgot so I spent most of the day with wet feet. Sneakers aren’t known for their water-proof features. Some riders only did 20 kilometres while others did 40 or 80 kms. All seemed to be having a ball. It’s now a fortnight to the state championships when we do it all again. This time I’ll definitely wear my rubber boots. I hope you enjoy this selection of the some 350 photos we took between us.

Having wet feet isn't very enjoyable at all. I have my boots in the caravan but forgot to take them in the car.

The photos are surreal, especially the top right. I love the colors and that ominous sky. Welcome home and get your boots ready for the state championships.

When the events are 160kms, the riders start at midnight but luckily we can't take photos in the dark or if it's raining so in that respect we're lucky. lol

@JudyEv I'd love to be involved with horseback riding, but we don't have it available. Four H is the only riding club, but they have their own horses. Once Jay retires, we are thinking about buying property in the country. Then, we can have a place for a couple horses:)

I wear hiking shoes these days, like sneakers, but fairly waterproof. I haven't got any wellies, so I'd be in really trouble during heavy rain

@marlina To me, wellingtons can be high or not so high. The ones I have at the moment come a bit past the ankle. They're mostly high enough for the few times I need them.

That's really nice photos! And they all look happy. I didn't go to take pictures of show jumping this weekend, it was raining so hard that I would have ruined my camera I guess.

@JudyEv Rain isn't too bad when you're riding, but I can usually do most of the warm-up inside and then only the competition is outside when the weather is bad. When I'm taking pictures I'm stuck in the rain The next competitions I suppose everything will be inside. Bad for photographers, it's so dark in the riding houses that it's really tricky getting good photos. Outside is definitly better.

@Torunn Do you have a camera that tolerates a certain amount of moisture? We don't like ours getting wet. We have trouble with light and shade when the riders go through the bush (forests). It's hard to get the settings right under some conditions. We try to get a spot with our backs to the sun so the riders' faces can be seen.

We don't take photos if it's raining - or if it's dark so in that respect we're luckier than those riding.

@wolfgirl569 Top left - all Arabs bar the one at the back which is part-Arab but it's the same bay in the top right and has a real Arab head. Bottom left - Arab/Warmblood, bottom right, the bay is an Anglo-Arab, the other two Arabs. Arabs certainly predominate in our endurance events.

There are some very pretty Arabs among the endurance horses. Some of the heads are exquisite. The top right are both Arabs and several of the others.

@LindaOHio That sounds more logical. Apparently a lot less people are getting colds and they're putting it down to better hygiene. Or maybe all colds are being attributed to COVID.

Oh spending the whole day with wet feet and in cold conditions can be troublesome. I remember that I once had my shoes and socks soaked and I had to spend time in office for 6 to 7 hours and it was so so tough. 350 Photographs is quite huge or do we say 'Humongous" ??

The horses are trained for the distance and have to qualify with shorter rides before they are allowed to tackle the longer ones. There are only 40-odd entries at this ride. At the next one, the State championships there might be 80 or 90 so we'll have double the photos.

@topffer And if it does rain, we can't take photos. Our cameras don't like the rain. And we can't take photos in the dark which saves us from getting up at midnight which is when those riding 160kms leave. So there are a couple of benefits. lol

Haha - We probably deleted 10% or more. Sometimes a horse was going along so nicely, I'd take six photos of it but then you really had to weed out a couple. I'll make a collage just to show you. The first six were at the one spots and the last three at another.
