In Srilanka there is shortage of coconuts and to highlight this serious issue the country's minister for coconuts climbed up a coconut tree and gave a press conference. Surprised !! a country with abundant coconut trees facing coconut shortage. Looks like over exploitation of coconut trees. Do you think the minister did the right thing by climbing a coconut tree to create awareness? Video link shared below:

Its risky for the minister to climb the coconut tree. He must thank the experts around who helped him climb the coconut tree using special climbing device.

I'm surprised that there is a shortage of coconuts. Are people cutting down the coconut trees?

@JudyEv thanks for your appreciation. Also the demand for coconut is high particularly during the Covid times as it helps in maintaining good health.

No the trees are not being cut but the demand for coconuts have increased. The Government needs to increase the land availability for cultivation of coconut trees.

I guess he wanted to make a point. I hope the media takes note of that and he would be able to convey his point to many.

@jayanth_77 That is also my next thing to say. But I guess there is nothing wrong with what he did. It may just not go well with others and see it as funny.

@jayanth_77 I will avoid buying it then as it probably has gotten very expensive and can only be imported I believe.

There is a huge demand for coconuts but within and outside Srilanka. The Corona pandemic has also contributed for the huge demand for coconut.

@shaggin I don't think there is any change in price of coconuts in the international market as Srilanka is not a major exporter of coconuts. Moreover every country with a seacoast have coconut trees. So if you like coconut you can buy from your local market with ease.

A naturally well-endowed country has gone to the dogs as they say. I think like almost everywhere the leaders look after themselves only. This is only drama.

Yes the present situation in Sri Lanka has become very volatile. The country is under heavy debt due to wrong financial policies of the Government.

Yes the coconut tree needs conservation. The coconuts are a staple food for the locals and also exported around the world. As demand for coconut increases there is a need for planting more coconut trees. But coconut trees bear fruit only after 7 years of planting and so it is a time consuming process.

Sounds strange! Have all the coconuts being forcibly exported or smuggled? Perhaps time for James Bond or Ethan Hunt to save the world from this shortage of Coconuts??
