Have you tried using charcoal to absorb odor?

I learned this from my mother. I remember seeing a small open container with charcoals placed inside our fridge. She said it helps absorb moisture and odor. I wonder if it can be used too in any room or anywhere smelly. Is it really an effective deodorizer? Charcoals are gaining popularity now, the activated charcoal that is. It has been an ingredient in some beauty and personal care products like tooth paste, soaps and facial masks. But I’ve never used such kind of products.

Yup, it is usually placed in a bowl and placed in the kitchen. Sometimes, people put charcoal inside their refrigerator.
