"In 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue" these words began a short verse every teacher I knew in grade school had us recite each Columbus Day. By the time I was eight years old I was already tired of the verse. And even though, I was a shy kid and could not even say boo to anyone inside of me I had a lot of words to say about having to recite this every year. However, my teachers all had prepared a simple one verse starting with these words, but if you are interested you can look online. There is a whole poem that begins with these words and is one of the most popular Columbus Day poems in the U.S written by Jean Marzolo. I guess it was my little poetic soul that was rebelling. I had begun experimenting in writing poetry in both Latvian and English. And can you imagine? I even wrote poems in Latvian about Latvia and how I wondered if I would ever see the country myself. Many, many years later and all grown-up I even lived there. Isn't life amazing?

Yes life can be quite amazing. At times, we can have things happening which we had thought about or imagined earlier but not expected. How is your week going?

Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer who stumbled upon the Americas and whose journeys marked the beginning of centuries of transatlantic colonization.

Life can have some strange twists and turns. I remember opening my history book to the map of the US in eighth grade and telling myself I would like to have my children born in California. Years later I joined the Navy, was stationed in San Diego, and two of my children were born there. I'm glad you were able to live in Latvia, a country you wrote poems about.

I hated to rotely repeat things too. When the teacher told me to write something over a hundred times, that I would not not stand in line, while waiting to come into the classroom, I thought that this was a waste of time, and paper. (I did not like queuing even in those days. I would go somewhere else, until I saw the line moving into the classroom, and only then would I join it, to enter the classroom too. I refused to stand in the line. He wanted me to stand in it.) I refused to do it, both stand in the line, and write useless words onto paper, and so I was strapped instead.
