Today husband and i went out for some work.
When we came,we saw an envelope on the sitting room,it was opened and it's for my husband.A check from citi bank.It is written strictly confidential and why my monster in- law opened it?I just don't like her attitude really?
If you were in the situation,a parcel, letter, has delivered to your name and your mother will open it without your concern, then what do you feel?

It happened to me long time ago. It was a statement from the bank, but it was not credit statement. My father opened it may he wondered what it was. It was addressed in the province.

Sorry - that's just not on. Parents really should respect the independence of their children once they become adult, and especially after they are married. My first marriage broke up due to the interference of my in-laws, so I have every sympathy with your situation.

@rhuenz does she live with you?
At least it was family. If he's not concerned about it then you shouldn't be either.

Sorry that happened. Yeah I would be mad. I sometimes open my mother's mail.

I would be livid is anyone opened mail not addressed to them without good reason. Your husband's mother certainly has no right to open mail addressed to him and hasn't had since he became an adult. It may well be her house, but that doesn't give her the right to open all mail addressed there!
I don;t know what the law is in your country but here it is actually a criminal offence (though rarely acted upon).

maybe they thought it was urgent so they opened it.
maybe they thought if your husband is confident he's not doing anything wrong, then it shouldn't bother him if they take a look.
or maybe because it's their house, they are still the boss.

I would not appreciate such behavior. Some mothers feel too insecure to their children grow up and have lives of their own. I think you should talk to her in a firm but respectful way and let her know that it's not acceptable and she should not do it in future. Maybe she thought it to be urgent and opened it. But even that does not justify opening any personal and confidential mail.

@rhuenz Even I would be angry. Have a clear talk with her. Your husband should take a firm step.

It did happen to me and it's my wife. I just told her next time I would be the first to open it.
