Finally Saw the Elk!

This photo was taken during our recent trip to Gatlinburg and the Smoky Mountains. We decided to take a drive over to North Carolina to see how things had changed and on the way we were treated to this herd of elk. Elk were introduced to the area several years ago and are protected at present time. A game warden was actually parked out by the road guarding these gals. Traffic was a a crawl and many pulled over to take pictures. This was a group of about 20 all together and at one time only one male in the group. I also got a photo of two engaging in a little battle which must have been two young males. My husband got a kick out of seeing them because I had told him riding up to the mountains that I had never seen elk up there before. I have one more photo that I will share with you soon and it is a close up! © 2020 Karen Gros, All rights reserved

What a wonderful sight to see! I've only seen elk in zoos that rehabilitated them. Awesome photo!

Oh that is really cool. I did not know there was a herd in NC. I know there is one in PA, and I have always wanted to see them. They are in a very out of the way area. NC would be roughly the same distance.

@rebelann We often see deer here out in the country and usually see them up in the Smokies but not this last trip. Also, didn't see any black bears in the last couple of trips and you used to see them on trips up there.

@kareng they've brought 'em there fer nefarious purpose - reproduce 'til their numbers 're stronger 'n then can be hunted fer money. i truly despise humans...

My hubby kept telling his brothers and friends about the coolest thing that happened; me saying I have never seen them and then we see so many of them. LOL!
