Mamma Elk Up Close and Personal

I mentioned earlier that I would post more elk photos that I took in the Smoky Mountains in North Carolina. This one is my favorite as she was standing right by the road and was just about 4 feet away from the car. Of course I had thoughts of her charging the car with me trying to get a decent photo of her, but that did not stop me for snagging the shot. After looking at the photo several times it appears this may be a pregnant momma. She looks to have a swollen tummy area but may just be the way she is built. The other elk were not near that plump. With the way traffic stops and people park for photos, I'm sure they have gotten used to the cars by now.

My parents used to own 55 acres on a mountain in Colorado, and we would spend many of our summers out there at the cabin on our property. The place was overrun by elk, and it was always enjoyable watching them, especially since they are so much larger than the tiny white-tailed deer we have in Florida. So awesome to see that you got to experience one up close. They are magnificent animals.

They were both interesting and fun to watch. I got some video of two having a little battle. Otherwise they were quite content just to graze and eat the hay there in the field.

It's possible; but I'm not an elk expert. Great shot.

That is a beautiful elk, Yes, she does look a bit on the heavy side. Probably that was why she did not run away it would have been difficult for her to move quickly
