What a Nap! Oh, Did I Mention the Bed in My Car?

Usually on the first night out I won’t sleep all that well. I think it’s getting adjusted to a bed that’s not mine. As usual, I didn’t sleep all that well last night. Additionally, I’m old and I can have a nap if I want one! So I found a shady spot, nice and secluded, in the Smokies, pulled in, put my window shades up, and decided to take a quick nap. I slept for two hours. Now, you might be wondering why I have a bed in my car. First, it’s not a “bed” as in mattress, box springs, and frame. I have a small car, that wouldn’t all fit! No, it’s an improvised sleeping spot. It’s very simple: an old sleeping bag stuffed with three 24”x24” four-inch memory foam cushions. With a camping pad underneath. That thing sleeps VERY well. Secondly, in traveling I have learned one thing for certain: doo-doo happens. I’d much rather have this and never need it than need it and not have it. So, if there’s a problem at the hotel and they don’t have my room, or if there’s a problem with road closure because of weather, construction, or accidents, at least I can sleep.

@FourWalls Fall is a beautiful time of year. We are going to fly up to New Jersey in two weeks as my grandson is finally coming home after 2 years. He is in the Navy and will be home for a few weeks and then getting sent to the west coast of the states. At least he will be home, although with all the nonsense going on with riots and fighting, I think it is more dangerous than where he is now.

@ramapo17 — he’s going to Whidbey Island? My brother was stationed there and he loved it. Of course, that was a long time ago.

I have traveled ever since I was 2 years old. My dad was in the Army when I was two years old and we moved around with him for awhile until he was sent to Germany and was in WWII. I think it was the start of my traveling love. As I got older, I got a job on cruise ships as a hairdresser and traveled to so many countries and learned a lot about the world. It was experiences I could never afford in a lifetime.

Cool! I never thought of those cushions! That's a great idea! I just wish I had a car to put it in. Around here it is against the law to sleep in your car!

Nice makeshift bed you have there. Is it comfortable though?

Yes. The cushions are memory foam, so they are sturdy and comfortable.

In the Smokies there are so many hiking trails that a parked car raises no suspicion unless it’s there for a day or longer.

When we retired, my wife and I lived out of the back of our jeep for nearly a year. (we stayed in motels usually every third night so we could shower etc.). But we had a blowup mattress that we would roll out and air up. All the stuff, clothes, food, drinks what have you would move to the front seat or the carry all on top. We had a blast doing that. --- After that year we bought an RV and continued our journey. We traveled, living out of the RV for five years then bought a house in Oregon. We've since sold the RV but I'm kinda wishing we had it back so we could safely travel to see the kids. --We are old too, and hae a few other issues that make this virus thing a real danger to us.

We had a couple of RV's and I miss them every time we want to go anywhere. My husband was getting a little nervous when we went to some areas that were so challenging to get around. I miss my RV all the time.

@cperry2 I would love to have another one. I am tired of sitting home doing nothing. Being my husband is the one who would drive and he doesn't want another one, I am out voted. I hope you get one and enjoy traveling again. Keep me posted with your trips.

@ramapo17 We are considering getting another, either a camper to put on my pickup or a small travel trailer. I don't think I want to spend another five years on the road, but having it for short hauls would be nice. The problem I am running into is that the quality factor is missing on most of the newer RV's. But we have begun looking to see what is out there.

It is! Six feet long (I’m 5’4”) and two feet wide. Beats the daylights out of putting the front seat back to catch a few zzzz’s!
