In The Kitchen With Our Christmas Pudding

We just finished at long last and it's steaming away on the stove. Its a good thing that we only make Christmas Pudding once a year, because there are a lot of steps and someone always forgets one of them lol and has to stop to incorporate one of the ingredient that was forgotten. This morning, it was the butter that hubby remembered at the last minute. It wouldn't be Christmas Pudding if something wasn't forgotten each year. But let me give you a bit of background.
Hubby was born in England and this is pretty much his tradition but it has become one that has become really special to me as well. Every October 31 we make our Christmas Dinner dessert... well one of them anyway. Not everyone likes Christmas Pudding (can't imagine lol) , so I usually come up with a second. Most people like Trifle so that is generally the second choice. But this year, there will be only three of us so he chose Chocolate Chip Oatmeal cookies... heavy on the chocolate chips. Very Heavy... As you can tell, we aren't leaving the house this year. Yesterday our Covid numbers went up yet again, so it makes sense to keep it just the three of us.
I have also given some thought to how we will celebrate Christmas with the family later this year. If all goes well, we will all get together in July for a big picnic at our local park... presents and all.
Oh, nearly forgot... we didn't forget the tradition of everyone in the household taking a turn stirring the Christmas Pudding and making a wish!
Would love to hear some of your traditions if some come to mind!!

Before I got married... neither did I. It was always Christmas Cake... which I still love. Funny thing about that... no one else in the family likes Christmas Cake but me!!

LOL... I guess that I should have mentioned that the pudding has to be made a long time before Christmas arrives. It has to sit and age! :)

@prinzcy I don't know what it would taste like if you ate it today... In the last 40 years, it's always been made Oct 31st lol!! But you have me curious now but that might ruin the wish. ;)

We don't use suet either :) I will have to re-watch that video... you definitely need flour... but not a lot now that I think about it. As for following traditions... I think that is all because of Mom. She was a genealogist and passed the bug to me. It was taking over my life so I stepped back, but plan on getting back into it in January. There are likely some new records that have come to life that I have never seen. On my to-do list is to find the portrait of my great grandmother that hung in Nanny's living room. No one seems to know what became of it. I have been looking for it now for years. If there is one copy, there has to be more.

@crazyhorseladycx We used a chopped up block of butter. Can't imagine using suet, but I guess they used what they had back then. Actually, it's easy to make... the only hard part is steaming it. YOU CAN'T LET THE WATER BOIL AWAY. So, you are pretty much tied to the kitchen for most of the day!

I love the sound of your Christmas pudding. Holidays have been mostly hubby and me for years so even though we celebrate we don't go anywhere. On Thanksgiving weekend hubby and I make a good sized batch of fruitcakes. The fruitcakes are based on a Rodale recipe so they are based on honey, butter, dried fruit, dates, figs. NONE of that waxy crud from the store. My daughter and a sister ask for one every year. Its a huge amount of work but something to do instead of just sitting and feeling bloated from a holiday meal.

I know what you mean about store bought cakes... They can' t hold a candle to one that has been made from scratch!!! I always receive a fruitcake from hubby as a little extra lol... he can't stand it lol... so its all mine. This one comes from a tiny local bakery and it is amazing!! At least in my mind lol. If he likes Christmas Pudding, I don't understand why he doesn't like fruit cake... but more for me... says the diabetic lol... I am incredibly careful though. I still have a chocolate orange (which I love) still sitting in the pantry from last Christmas. One day, I will get to it. Not taking chances and so far according to all of my blood tests, I'm doing it right.

@Hate2Iron My fruitcake is rich but also is real food. My daughter has gone on a real diet. She lost 70 pounds and when I asked her if she wanted a fruitcake this year and she said yes!

What a nice tradition. It's just the two of us; so we don't have many traditions. Some years my husband and I will make a roaster full of stuffed cabbage for Christmas.

What do you stuff it with?? We have something similar... well kind of. Christmas dinner at our house would not be Christmas dinner unless there were Brussel Sprouts... which I can't stand but it's part of an English Christmas Dinner that you can't deviate from apparently.

Cooking and ironing go hand in hand, so it’d stand to reason if you hate to iron you’d also hate to cook.
Hope it turns out delicious when you finally have it!
