Long Distance, Was Really Long Distance....

So I asked permission
To make a very long distance call
I was granted the permission
All the way from Wolverhampton, London, Madrid and Pamplona
I was calling to the guy you see in the avatar
Only manual calls could be made then
Very dodgy to get through even to London
So imagine all the rest
In the end I got through
Because you are the best.
When I called my Husband he was doing Military Service so there was only one phone on a wall for everyone.
Lucky for me my Spanish was good enough to get me there.
Quite nerve racking as the disconnections were many but I was just lucky and could only speak for a few minutes even then.
The Supervisor asked me could you not find a boyfriend from next door?
I had got everyone in the Telephone Exchange where I worked in a twirl I can tell you.
All I can tell you that I was on cloud nine for a whole week and nuff said between him and me is all the other stuff.

This is my Hub and me when we first met in Spain and he had to go and do the Military Service a whole 18 months of it.
He wrote me letters so many I got to know the Postman and him me as well.
So important are letters to each other even now its so personal.

Its not the same with whatsapp or text messages you can feel it but at the same time you can“t there is nothing like the personal handwriting of someone in your hands.

Thank you it was quite an adventure to get through so many operators you had to be very quick and make yourself understood for the operator in Madrid she did not speak English.

We could not call after that it was just a one time thing.
It was much stricter then but we did meet up in person as I managed to save enough money to go and see him over there and he was still doing the Military Service and took a great risk going to see me.

Oh yes and it took about a quarter of an hour then between all the cord switchboards that were there between me and the guy in Spain.
Nothing like now press a button and hey presto.

Nah, she was very strict but that was like the icing on the cake she was very good about me calling there all the way to Spain it was one heck of a thing I can tell you Spanish operators always cutting you off lol.
Oh him next door he is much much nicer than that.

The history of it is fascinating. I sort of remember when phone calls were placed by operators on a cord board.

I remember it only too well as it was all that there was then and its not really that long back either.
It was all done by manual exchange, the plugs the switchboard the whole lot and the G.P.O was a strict place to work for so I was very lucky to get permission even then.

No but he was for 18 months it was not voluntary and they got paid cents although the food was very good.
I had been out with local boys but no luck there.
Not saying anymore.
