In Their Lives 11-9-52: What? Politicians Getting Along?!

It’s time for another look into history. I’m using online newspaper archives and my family’s November birth years (1930, 1952, 1953, 1963, and 1977) to celebrate their birthdays. This is timely, so I thought I’d use this headline from 1952. 11/9/52: Truman Offers Ike Say in Policy Yes, you read that right. No, it’s not fake news. After the 1952 presidential election, Republican Dwight Eisenhower set about choosing cabinet members. As a sign of a peaceful, civil transfer, outgoing Democratic president Harry Truman offered to let Ike sit in on policy decisions. Ike thanked Truman, but declined. He said he’d accept the information Truman provided and send his representatives to Washington, but he wasn’t going to start governing until Inauguration Day.
