We did a decent afternoon's work for a change

In the bush just outside the boundary of our property in Donnybrook, Western Australia, is – or rather was – a dead jarrah tree. Vince has had his eye on it for a few years as jarrah makes wonderful firewood. Jarrah is one of our varieties of eucalypt. Today, we bit the bullet, took the car and trailer, and cut it down. Technically we’re not allowed to take wood from the forest but, as it’s dead, it’s not likely anyone will object, even if they find out about it, which is unlikely. We had a bit of trouble felling it with the chainsaw getting jammed at one point. We find this sort of activity much more taxing than a year or two ago but it’s now all cut up with the last of it still in the trailer. We’ll unload it tomorrow and stack it in the shed. We’ve had hot showers and an iboprufen so hopefully, after a good night’s sleep, we’ll be right as rain tomorrow. The dead tree is in the centre of the photo.

You need a handyman so you and Vince can sit back with a long cold one and watch someone else do the hard graft.

@JudyEv Just get him to cut it smaller!! I know some blokes who would rather share their wife than their power tools

@WorDazza He has split all the bigger stuff now but we got it back to the woodshed first. It might be a toss-up between me and his chainsaw as to which he'd lend first.

We could have hired a backpacker or two to help but you know men - they never share their wives or their chainsaws!! So he would still have had to cut it down and I could load all but the heaviest bits so there didn't seem much point getting help. It used to be a matter of pride to load as fast as he could cut it up but I couldn't lift the biggest pieces yesterday.

@JudyEv Yeah, I didn't start yesterday, I think I am going to have to force myself to start today, because this nice weather won't last long.

Sometimes, once you start these things, they're not so bad. It's just taking that first step that can be hard.

More than likely, iit's the last one we'll ever do. Which is a bit sad in some ways. These things used to be quite fun but now it's more of a challenge.

@crazyhorseladycx Perhaps you know 'white ants' as 'termites'? Yes, they eat the wood and used to be a worry in buildings until they found ways to stop them.

Thanks for the offer of help! lol Even virtual help is appreciated. I don't think the tree will be missed. The white ants were just starting to get into it.

Well, I guess you will be well prepared the next time you have a fire. Only the first bit of the woods behind me technically belongs to me, but like you..it wouldn't be a big deal for me to cut down a tree elsewhere in it, No one would care.

People are always scavenging for wood in our bush areas but some take down trees in their prime.

@judyev That is indeed a hard day’s work. I’m on the ibuprofen because I sat down the wrong way and twisted my back out of shape - I’d be no use at felling trees.

We used to relish such tasks but now we have to 'gird our loins' so to speak. It's not nearly as much fun as it used to be. I'm sorry about your back.

We're not too bad this morning. We have to unload one load but that is easier than loading it. A soak in a hot bath might be called for this evening.

This is where we live. We have 18 acres with bush on two sides of us. Here is an aerial view of our house and property. The house is in one corner of a rectangle. The tree was in the bush on the left-hand side.
