Funny Story: Can You Dance?!?

It's my break time teaching online. Let me share this funny conversation with my young boy kid online. We were talking about dancing and the like. Me: Can you dance? Student: Yes, I can dance. Me: Do you like it? Student: Yes, I like dancing. Me: Can you move to the beat? Student: *#@ No. Me: I thought you like dancing. Student: Yes, teacher. Me: If you can dance, then you can dance to the beat of the music. Student: I got it, teacher. Me: Whew!?! Oh, my! I really need to explain further and dance for him to get it. That's how teaching works. Sometimes it needs to be a clown in front of a video camera. Image Credit: images.immediate.co.uk

@sophie09 They are still considered students of mine online. They are non-native speakers.

I agree. It cannot be denied that most kids are more into virtual stimulation. It is a very rewarding moment if they had learned something after the class sessions.

@Shavkat That's right, it's rewarding momen. I think it is very rare for students to learn something after a class session

@Reen07 It depends if the students are willing to learn, too. Even if the teachers are good, it will be not effective with this concern.

I agree. He seems so exhausted doing all his homework today. I think the nosebleed moment when teaching a 2-year-old boy.

Haha, example is a best practice. It's okay to be clown sometimes, it brings happiness.

Don't get me wrong. I do sometimes feel happiness when teaching good students as a clown. For the rude students, I just go with the flow.

And sometimes a teacher has to be a clown in front of their students and hope the principal doesn't walk in while doing so. . True story!

@Shavkat Thank you for sharing that with us. I found dancing to be hard enough for me and then seeing the guy with the skates on would be even harder. Do you dance with skates on?

I've never been much of a dancer, I always felt awkward and that I had two left feet. but I could move to the beat -- mostly. I used to do and teach Karate and we had Kata's which to an outsider would look very much like a dance. I struggled to get the steps, the timing, and the movements all in sync. In reality, it is a series of fighting moves put in sequence to mimic an actual encounter. In effect, it is a routine of movements that teach the muscles how to respond to particular situations. In the six weeks we had to learn a new Kata and be tested on it, I would be out on the practice mats sometimes for hours trying to master the large and small movements I do not feel I ever got any of them exactly correct. But I did manage to pass the tests.

I must admit that when I was still in my schooling at school. I am always dancing with my classmates on stage. My teachers are obliged to do it. I haven't tried Kata. It sounds complicated to me.

@Shavkat Kata certainly can be complicated and the higher in Karate ranks one goes, the more intricate it becomes. I don't know if you are familiar with Tai Chi, a common exercise for a lot of people in Asia, and more and more so here in the US. Tai Chi is in fact a Kata, There are several different styles but that is their basis. It was one of the things suggested for us to learn as we reached higher ranks. Tai Chi (Chen style) done properly is the most difficult KataI've ever performed. There are some watered down versions out there too though.

seems like the kid has just started learning dance, it's normal to be a little demented when you start something new and especially at a young age, although it's all on the teacher to make them comfortable
