Face Time With Cousin in ICU

Updating a few who have asked about my cousin. She has been in ICU on a ventilator for over a week now. She is over 500 miles away and no visitors allowed due to COVID. She is negative for COVID.
Got a call last night that she coded twice. But is stable now. The ventilator has been off and on a few times over the past few days. Still no exact reason for what is going on with her breathing.
Her sister, the one I talk about often who is blind, was able to go see her today. Her daughter as well. The nurses allowed the visit due to her condition. She started to improve when she saw her sister. The nurses were amazed.
They allowed me to face time with her. She couldn't talk, on the ventilator. But she saw me and I could talk to her and she would nod her head back and forth. She understood what I was saying to her. We were both crying. But they were good tears.
That face to face communication is everything. Even if it was on the phone, it made my day. And hers as well. We all think she was giving up when she coded.
She has a condition called Metabolic Acidosis that causes her breathing to stop, and her heart rate to rise. They are still running tests to rule out anything else.
I had my name added to the list to call and speak to the doctors and nurses. Another relief. I will call Monday and try to find out more from the doctor. A very sad situation but maybe it will improve.

Family visits are a great way to improve the spirits and improved spirits often result in improved health. I hope that they can help her get better.

@CarolDM Yes I did realize you were 500 miles away but even on facetime you get family time and it sounds like it was very good for her morale.

It's amazing how personal or face-to-face interaction can improve a patient. It has even been shown that contact with pets or therapy animals has improved medical patients' conditions. I hope the medical staff continue allowing family to interact with your cousin, as I think this will do a world of good for her.

@CarolDM Willpower also plays an important role. I hope she has the willpower to hang on and fight to regain her health and strength.

I remember about your cousin. That is very hard that no one can visit her. I am glad her sister and daughter were able to see her. I am so glad you could do face time with her. So sorry she could not talk back but you could see her. It sounds very sad but I hope she makes it. I am glad you are on the list and can talk to the doctors and nurses.

You know, I am so sorry to hear about this. But face time is so very important. I have a friend whose Mom is in the nursing, that's the only way they can talk. Prayers for you and your family.
