Grackles Enjoying Suet in Trees

This time of year there are always birds at the feeder. The grackles seem to take over when they show up. I put some suet feeders in the trees. Many birds like this during the colder times of the year. Woodpeckers like the suet too. Snapped this photo from my deck. A flock of grackles were enjoying the suet in two trees. Now if I can find something for the crows. They are liking the peanuts on the deck way too much. Bird watching can take my mind off the world. A nice break for sure.

Birdwatching is so relaxing. I haven't seen a bird since last week. It was a falcon.

I don't see the big birds in the yard, the hawks stay at a distance thankfully.

@CarolDM You are lucky for that. We were sitting on our bench outside during a warm spell and watched a hawk swoop down from a tree and carry off a squirrel. Broke my heart.

@DianneN I don't see squirrels but they will also go after the smaller birds.

Thanks! Snapped from my deck. The sun has to hit these just right to see the colors. In the shade they do look black.

@crazyhorseladycx You would see a lot on my deck. Thanks, I got lucky actually. This tree was at the back of the yard, so it was several feet away.

Grackles look like a crow. How does they differ from the crowd?

Crows are about four times bigger than grackles. And grackles have bright yellow eyes. Crows are all black.

@CarolDM The barn cats are very useful here. I do make sure they have plenty of hiding spots. But once in a while a young kitten will just be gone. I figure a hawk got the poor thing.

The crows and grackles always take over the feeders from the little birds. Such bullies!
