Whittling Down, Making Space, Helping Others

About a week ago I posted a discussion regarding the need to find a storage unit to hold some of our stuff. After talking with my husband he told me not to worry about getting a storage unit. He said I should focus on getting rid of some of the items I have held onto. On Facebook there was a woman who said that she and her family were starting over and needed some Christmas lights and decorations. I told her that I had some extra lights and decorations. I went through my Christmas decorations and found 4 strands of white lights that I haven't been using. Also had quite a few decorations for the tree and house that I gave her. I then asked her if she needed anything for her household. She was quick to give me a list. Dishes, cups, pots and pans, silverware, and a few other things. So, I headed to the kitchen to see what I could gather for her. I had purchased a new, inexpensive cookware set about 9 years ago. I used it quite a bit, but have slowly been replacing it with cast iron cookware. So I put that set into a box. Checked in my lower cabinets for more to give her. I had 2 crock pots, one big, one small. I put the big one in the box, took it out, put it back in, took it out, and finally convinced myself that I do not need the big one. I hadn't used it in over a year. If I do use one it will be the smaller one. Found an old toaster, which I had only used for a week before I decided that I didn't like the way it toasted and replaced it with a better model. Put that in the box too. Found a small Pyrex baking dish that is too small for any dish I would make. Put that in the box. Added some plastic cups in the box as well. Had to take out the McDonald's plastic cup because Little Miss couldn't part with it. LOL. I loaded up the car and headed to meet her husband. He was happy to accept them. Took him 2 trips to bring them to their apartment. Told him I would see what else I had that I think could help them out. Later that evening I got a message from the woman to thank me for everything. She said her daughter was thrilled to see the toaster!! That really made me smile to think that something like a toaster could make someone happy. I am now reaching out to my friends to see if they can also help this family out with items that I do not have for them. Still thinking about other things I can give them to help them along. You never know what little things you can do for others that will make their lives better. Reach out, help out.

so glad yer hubs suggested such, hon. 'tis best to rehome what'cha don't need/use to make room versus payin' fer a storage unit. kudos to ya fer helpin' this family out. the 'nlaws 've rentals 'n 're prone to givin' schtuff left 'hind to the hubs...which i'n turn take to the women's shelter. give 'em their info fer tax purposes. 'tis 'lways someone with the need 'n they're most grateful to get e'en the barest 'f neccessities.

I would rather give to someone that can truly use the items I no longer use. There is only one place in town for someone to purchase second hand items, and usually they are not cheap to purchase. I do donate to this place, but recently have been reluctant to do so because they overprice their donations.

@crazyhorseladycx there is a lady close by that accepts donations for her tag sale. The profits from the tag sale benefits our soldiers that are overseas. She puts together care packages with much needed supplies. I have decided that anything I have that I no longer need will go to her.

That's really awesome! My friend loves to do this. She often buy clothes and stuff but only wear and use a couple of times. She would give them to me and the rest to the donation center. Things that we don't need, might be really useful to others.

I blame my mother for instilling the thought in my head to keep anything that someone gives you. She said you may be able to use it one day or know someone that will. Thankfully I have been able to say no when offered anything. I have accepted a few items, but only if I truly can use it. And then there are times that even though I could use it, I didn't have space for it, so I declined the offer.

@prinzcy yes it was. My mom grew up in the depression and they did with what they had and accepted second hand without batting an eye.

@ElusiveButterfly My mom also have the same thought. We can't really blame them. Things were harder while they're growing up.

I would love so much to give directly to someone in need. I usually bring the boxes to the local charities, at least I can help people in need. You made a family happy for sure.

I am delighted that someone can find use for the things I no longer need. I posted on Facebook asking my friends if they have any of the other items she needs. Many are helping out. Such a great circle of friends!!

@ElusiveButterfly When I moved here from France, I contacted local people and we gave them many things we had at home. Also furniture, it costed more to move the furniture than to buy new furniture here.

@LadyDuck We will most likely bring the furniture that we have with us to our new place when we move. We will of course need to buy new furnishings as well.

How wonderful to make a specific family so happy. That was so kind of you. We place things we don’t need or want and hubs drops them off at the local charity shop. It’s still a good feeling.

There is a woman that lives near us that holds biweekly tag sales. She accepts donations for her sales. The profits from the tag sale goes entirely to purchase essential items for military care packages. Whatever I have in this place that I no longer use will go to her.

I helped a young mother at the shelter with some items for her and her four kids all under five. You should always help others if you can.

Many put items up for sale on Facebook and I understand that they want to make some extra money. I've been told many times to do this too. However, if I can find someone to use these things I would rather give them away.

Being a minimalist, I am bound to discard instead of buying additional storage.

I am trying to get down to the basics. One day I will have space to be able to use the many things I have in my kitchen. I love to cook and bake.
