The fight is on to save the Stewart tree

Vince went to his monthly Men’s Shed meeting on Tuesday night where the guest speaker spoke about the threat to the survival of the Stewart tree. What? You’ve never heard of the Stewart tree? That’s okay. Neither had I until Vince told me about it. The Stewart tree is a karri (Eucalyptus diversicolor) which is located about 20 kms west of Manjimup in a valley at Record Brook which is an eastern tributary of the Donnelly River. At 85 metres high, it is Western Australia’s (WA) tallest tree and listed as the 15th tallest in the world. First named and measured in the 1940s, it was passed over as a potential location for a fire lookout tower. Karris are endemic to the wet south-west corner of WA and some were measured at 90+ metres high before logging began in the area. The tallest tree in Europe is a karri (73 metres) which was planted in Portugal in the 1890s. The survival of the tree will be compromised when a 15 gigalitre dam is built just downstream. Nearly 80 hectares of old-growth karris will be cleared for the dam footprint and billions of litres pumped out of the Donnelly River to fill it. This will impact on what is at the moment a pristine environment. Disturbing the area in this way will have a serious impact on the surrounding bushland. You do have to wonder why humans have to tamper with rivers, etc. I’ll add a link to the article that supplied my information. Now I’m off to write some letters to politicians. Those opposed to the plan have given a draft letter with some very convincing facts and references. I’m pretty sure it won’t make a difference but it will make me feel better. Photo of the Diamond Tree which was used as a fire lookout tree. Imagine going up that ladder every morning – and down again at night.

They aren't going to chop down the tree but they are changing the environment so much that the tree will eventually succumb.

The Diamond Tree is much shorter than this one. It will be a great shame if it is destroyed.

Hope they save it. Over here they are better a high speed rail in the name of green travel, but in the process have already destroyed ancient woodlands. Good job, Government!

@JudyEv And they seem unable to learn from other people's mistakes. I just read more here:

Sometimes, they seem incredibly short-sighted. All hail the all-mighty dollar. Nothing else matters.

It is so short-sighted to put these magnificent specimens at risk. Heaven knows how old it is.

NOT climbing that ladder. I agree that nature needs to be left alone. She knows what she is doing.

oh no!! i'm so glad that folks 're bandin' together though to protest such nonsense. humans tend to do 's they wish, no care fer what they could/would destroy by their 'fforts. those lands need protectin', the native 'nhabitants need protectin', 'ncludin' that gloriously ol' karri. best 'f luck, may take more'n a few letters, phone calls, emails'n letters to editors 'n 'lected officials to get such'n place. so glad they've a draft 'f sorts with so much info, makes writin' such much easier'n doin' all the fact huntin 'yerself. can non-australian residents 'lso send one? if'n so, jest lemme know. uhm, nope'n that ladder thingy. i've no fear 'f heights, but 'f fallin'!

@JudyEv oh, thanks much! 'tis not a petition, per say, so dunno if'n such'd be 'gainst the 'rules' here 'r not? doesn't matter coz i've plans to send 'em one anyhow. i know that many issues 'cross the globe'll not 'ccept non-residents thoughts'n such matters. hopefully such'll do some good, doesn't hurt to try, eh?

I didn't like to ask in my post but that would be wonderful. This link gives a suggested letter. I might rejig my letter/s a little. They're not going to read 100s of letters all the same but at least they'll know x number of people are concerned. And the letter gives all the background and food for thought.

It is horrible that mankind continues to destroy the environment, all in the name of progress. It will be sad to lose such beautiful trees. I like Gary's idea of planting two new trees for every tree that succumbs after the dam is built. That is definitely one of the things I love about the city I live in, you are required to plant two new trees for every tree you remove.

Planting two for one is a great idea. We should get to see this tree over the next few days and will photograph it.

It is sad when humans want progress at the cost of nature. Here's hoping enough write letters of protest to try to save the Stewart tree.
