My Rating **** Genre – Horror/Action/Western. Run Time – 132 Minutes. Certificate – 18R Country – Brazil Awards – 31 Wins & 27 Nominations = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = I have seen a few Brazilian movies and they generally tend to be about police corruption and the favela’s or the class and race struggle in this rather unique and colorful country. Bacurau, on the other hand, is not your normal Brazilian film. In fact it’s in a genre of its own, drama, meets Horror meets Western meets dark comedy and first time director Kleber Mendonça Filho has come up with something very original here. ===Cast=== • Sônia Braga as Domingas • Udo Kier as Michael • Bárbara Colen as Teresa • Thomas Aquino as Pacote / Acacio • Silvero Pereira as Lunga • Thardelly Lima as Tony Jr. • Rubens Santos as Erivaldo • Wilson Rabelo as Plinio • Carlos Francisco as Damiano • Luciana Souza as Isa • Karine Teles as Foreigner • Julia Marie Peterson as Julia ===Plot==== The people of the tiny rural town o fBacurau , Serra Verde state, Brazil, are mourning the passing of matriarchal village elder and spiritual guide Carmelita, locals and relatives alike gathering in the square for her joyful and noisy send off and funeral. We learn there is a dispute over water rights from the local river, being dammed upstream, the corrupt mayor of Serra Verde, Tony Junior (Thardelly Lima), playing his particular stringed instrument in that fiddle. The water is trucked in because of that by village alpha male Domingas (Sônia Braga) and local town hottie Teresea (Bárbara Colen). But it’s the mayor’s re-election this particular week and he has to face the villagers on the stump, who are not best pleased of his arrival. Today the water truck has bullet holes in it as twenty or so horses from a nearby farm wander aimlessly in the village streets. Curious to these two events, some villagers are dispatched to the local farm of where they know they came from to see what’s what, dead bodies riddled with bullets being the problem. When the power goes down in the village after two strangers from Rio ride into town asking odd questions on trial bikes it’s not going to be a normal day in Bacurau as the towns folks prepare to repel the enigmatic and growing threat. ===Results=== What I like most about this movie is it doesn’t try to explain itself. Its multi genre and decides where it wants to go and doesn’t care why. There are all sorts of things going on here in a very modern way but yet cliché western. You never really know any motives for the attack if the truth be told. That helps it in so many ways as the director can really experiment and have fun. It’s gruesome at times in that B-Movie way and the cast unknown and simplistic on screen. Issues of skin color are raised with the peasants being of the darker variety being suppressed by the whiter skinned Brazilians the main one. The place names are fictional and, like the characters, have significance in Brazilian history, apparently. There is a political message woven neatly in there by the young new director. It’s funny, sleazy and suspenseful in places and plenty of surprises. It’s hard not to admire its originality and quirkiness. Foreign films are known for their unique styles as they never have the Hollywood budgets to be extravagant and every Brazilin Real spent wisely. Definitely one to look out for by foreign film fans, great stuff at just $3.4 million dollars to make and a winner of multiple awards... ===RATINGS=== Imdb.com 7.5/10.0 (17,345votes) Rottentomatos.com 91% –critic’s approval Metacritic.com 82% – critic’s approval ===Trailer=== https://www.imdb.com/video/vi1699659545?playlistId=tt2762506&ref_=tt_ov_vi

My son has been in Brazil for the past year. He says I will definitely have a dose of culture shock should I venture down there, but hey as far as I know, culture shock never killed anyone!
