For two days I’ve promised no surprises to close out this collection of songs with “fall” in the title. And I’m keeping my word on that. You all know what’s coming tomorrow, and those of you who know this song (looking towards Olney, Illinois) probably knew this one was coming, too. And here it is!
#2: Falling Down - Joe Walsh
Well, DUH!!!!
Burning the candle at both ends
Twice the light in half the time
I love that line.
This was the song that made me realize how similar Don Henley can sound to Joe Walsh. (Well, this and “Fire Lake” by Bob Seger: that’s not Walsh, that’s Henley doing the “fire LAKE!!!!” at the end.) It’s also one of the songs that made me realize that there is so much more to Joe Walsh than the crunching power chords and comedy. Although there’s plenty of both on this album (including one of Walsh’s funniest songs, “All Night Laundromat Blues”), this is one of Walsh’s great ballads.
One of Don Henley’s, too: he wrote the lyrics and sings backup (including the fade-out’s “falling down down in the ground ground”).
