Horror Movies

I am a coward, no really, I spook easily. But for some insane reason, I am fascinated with horror movies, strange documentaries, mysterious and paranormal videos on YouTube. My husband, on the other hand, is not a big fan. Since I am a scaredy cat, whenever I find a movie or show that I want to watch related to the strange, dark and mysterious, I will convince my husband to join me. The other will always be no. I want to watch it, but if I want to give in, then I will have to watch it by myself. Even back then, I have never managed to convince my husband to watch anything related to these scary films. So I have no choice but to brave it and watch alone. I will end up scared and jumpy for a few days until I cannot think about it anymore. Then I will find something to new watch, then the cycle repeats.

If you're so scared why do you watch horror movies?

I find these fascinating, especially those based on real story. I know it's probably a form of self torture, but for me it's like when you told me not to go to the attic, where will you find me? In the attic. That probably does not make a lot of sense, I admit that I have some unbelievable preferences sometimes.

@Raine38 Yes. Like in the horror movie the girl hears a sound, and does she run away from it? Hey, no. She goes in the direction of the sound. I can hear the audience already - "No! Don't go in there..."

@sharonelton And then, calls out "Hello?" I would have been screaming at her, no, you just gave your position away!

Funny enough, Horror movies don't bother me. I find them kind of boring, actually. One of my best friends, that's her favorite genre.

@Raine38 I think because I can't see what's going on, it doesn't affect me. Sure, sound effects could give something away. But, kind of gives away some of the jump scares they do that make them what they are.

@kaylachan I don't like jump scares, but that is the one thing that will never be gone in these kind of films.

For some reason there is some appeal to me about the format, the sound effects, the editing that I find fascinating. More so if it is based on real story.

My daughter went to watch Ian McKellen live in London. The cumpleat thespian was telling how afraid he was of Christopher Lee when they were filming Lord of the Rings, McKellen was imagining Lee would turn into Dracula and bite him on the neck. And they are good friends. I grew up watching Christopher Lee also, and up to now, you cannot make me watch horror movies. I do think the producers of such movies are sick in the mind, including the scriptwriters. But of course, the movies are marketable. What can I say? And if it's Stephen King, who would believe the author mentally ill? Could be that I am just the jumpy scaredy cat, too. Sigh.

For me if the actors in the movie are very known to me and I have seen them play other roles, I do not tend to be too scared. Asian horror movies though, especially from other Asian countries where I do not know the actors, is more "believable" for me if you will.

Yes, Netflix has lots of that right now. Ever since lock downs started, it seems like Netflix has been adding lots of very interesting shows.

I used to watch horror movie a lot. I never felt scared. But I don't know since when I feel scared so easily. I always drag my daughter to watch with me, since my husband always say no to horror. After watching it, I always paranoid. I feel something watch over me, lurking in the dark. Now with my pregnancy and my bladder asks for more attention in the middle of the night, I never watch horror movie.

I will be so afraid to get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom or the kitchen for a glass of water. Once I waited until my husband needs to go to the bathroom too so I can go with him.

@Cheyee If I can't wait anymore, I will start tossing and turning in bed so my husband will "accidentally" wake up, then I pretend that I don't know what's going on. So since he's up, I will go to the bathroom.

The latest one that I have seen is "Hush" on Netflix, about a few months ago. It is a story about a deaf and mute writer who decided to stay in a secluded woods to be alone and be able to write. Her nearest neighbor is a young husband and wife a few miles away. When a masked killer went and killed the wife right outside her glass sliding door. Because she cannot hear what's going on, she did not see it nor hear about it obviously. She now then must fight for her life because the killer decided to hunt her and kill her. Now, how is she going to fight for her life when she's deaf and mute? I will not spoil it for you, in case you decide to watch it.

@youfiq Right now I am looking forward to the 2021 film adaptation of Samurai X. The only downside is I have to read the subtitles, but I have loved the anime that I cannot not watch it. If you want a classic, Shawshank Redemption is good and my favorite, really tackles on graft and corruption, poor justice system, and how there is life after the dark.
