Been a lil chilly out'n these parts

United States
December 17, 2020 2:34pm CST
We're thawin' from the 'deep freeze' here, wind's shifted from the south. Headin' back 'nto highs'n the low 50's, though the nights're still'n the low teens. Yesterday 'twas calm, wind wise, so's I took 'dvtanage 'f e'ery moment. Relishin' the sun 'pon my face. The need fer not so many layers 'f clothin' one'd think I 'twas hangin' my hat'p'n the arctic somewhere. One 'f the tasks tended 'twas to not jest break the ice out'ta the stock tanks, but to fetch 'em out. The hubs says 'tis silliness, the horses can break the ice if'n they wish a drink. Uhm, sure, if'n they could stomp 't with their hooves... 's ya can tell from this pic, 'twas 'bout 1 1/2" deep. Would'a frozen e'en deeper if'n left 's the temps plummeted to 13(f), winds makin' the 'feels like' -3(f). Winter Solstice 'tis jest a mere 5 days 'way. The first day'f winter to be celebrated with temps'n the low 60's. A bonus bein' the day 'fter, we'll slowly start regainin' daylight time. Those 'f 's who suffer from the lack 'f such 'll be rejoicin' 'n such a wonder.

That's a bit thick. Your husband isn't very wise. Five days to winter. Maybe then we'll see the snow come our way here. I sure hope so, though the forecast isn't encourging. I'm glad you're having nice temps to start winter with. That is the one nice thing about the winter solstice, daylight will start to increase. Though it will be about a month before we start to tell the difference.

he's not the care sadly. doesn't matter to him if'n critters suffer coz 'f his desire not to tend to these matters. 'f course, out'n the wild they could stomp a hole through ice. his logic 'bounds... yepperz, 5 more days, e'en less now. i'm giddy with the prospect, e'en though such's a slow process. makes dealin' with wintry weather a bit more pleasant. 't least from my perspective. i've sorta got fingers crossed 'tis a mild winter coz the autumn's not been so kind. 'tis a shame we couldn't've gotten moisture with the rest.

@just4him no ma'am, not wild, 't least not anymore. horses're purty good 't breakin' ice, 'll e'en gnaw such with their teeth. but, when 'tis this thick they cannot. 'tis cruel to me to 'xpect 'em to. i count the days to those seconds more 'f daylight, lol. most oft our winters wait 'til january-march, with blizzards 's late's the 1st 'f may. i know, weird country!

@crazyhorseladycx Your horses aren't in the wild and shouldn't be expected to act like they are. Yes, me too. I love winter, but I do like to see at night.

That's some thick ice - I'm glad you broke it out for the horses - not silly at all. Getting that sun must've felt so good as it's so cold out there . . . that's something we take for granted here (and here I am complaining how cold it is at mid 60s!). Learning more about gardening this year has made me realize "changes" in the sunlight . . . I mean, I knew about it of course, but it's made me more observant of it. Here comes Winter Solstice!

@crazyhorseladycx Just how did you break out those thick pieces of ice - I hope the pieces were small enough so you could manage 'em out easily - you superwoman you! The winds come and go here . Ah, your daughter is in Vegas! I heard they finally got rain a few days ago! Yep, cold is definitely not my forte. Well, I like some cold, but not icy cold. Now I am going to check out the wintery changes - I most definitely see it in the plants - but now to look towards the skies!!!

@much2say a sharp shovel to break such 'nto pieces, then used said shovel to haul 'em out. not small chunks, harder to get those lil suckers out. kinda like pullin' weeds...very therapeutic, lol. 'twas a beaut here today, jest a light breeze. yepperz, her'n her bunch're out'n vegas. parts got rain, sadly where she resides 'twas none. did get cold though. granddaughter said 'twas 27 when she went to work't midnight. i fear i aint a fan 'f temps lower 'n 80 :) the skies've been tellin' quite the stories, jest wish i could'a captured more'f their beauty.

yepperz, 'twas purty thick, no way the horses could'a gotten to water through the night without 'ts removal. the sun'n no winds 'twas glorious, got lots tended. no worries, the daughter lives out'n las vegas. don't blame either 'f ya fer complainin' 'bout the cold when such's not what'cher used to. yepperz, gardenin' makes ya more 'ware 'f e'en subtle changes :) i look ferward to e'ery second'n time there 'tis more daylight.

You've got lots of ice. It is cold here and we've had a little dusting of snow here and there, but no ice.

@crazyhorseladycx I keep a hammer in the carport for the thicker ice. It is a good way to work out issues The goat buckets are easy to pick up and dump if the ice gets thick on theirs. Just think about the fact that I havent seen 70s in more than a month. That will make you feel better

@wolfgirl569 nah, that don't make me feel any better, lol. ya gotta recall that i'd snow/ice/sleet 'n hail back'n september. we'd days 'f record breakin' highs 'fter. fer a few days, which then turned to low digits. kinda diff'cult to pick'p 'n dump 300 gallon water tanks :)

sure, rub't'n that thus far my autumn 'tis been a blustery cold disaster compared to yers, lol. nah, heel 'f a boot'd done nothin' but perhaps broken yer ankle with this schtuff. took a sharp edged shovel...'n anger that needed to go someplace 'safe'.

thankfully such 'twas jest'n the horses water troughs. the winds'd been too brutal to get't out sooner, so's i'd jest been takin' out a section so's they could drink durin' the night. 'twas a tad chilly with the winds today, e'en though such came from the southwest. jest a 'bite' that reminds ya'f the seasons. layers're the 'nly way to go. 'f course, i tend to work a bit'n take some layers off. then ferget where the heck i've left 'em, lol. i do purty well, the layers, snow skiin' britches (highly recommend if'n ya gotta be outdoors - windproof, waterproof'n insulated), muck boots (same's those britches). wear a mask with a scarf o'er. 'nly thingy gettin' cold'd be 'round my eyes. so, 'm stayin' warm's possible. hope ya continue to do the same. don't 'nvy ya those 30's fer certain.

'n God...sure he'd not 'ppreciate such a gesture either.

oh dear, 'tis good though to get out'n get fresh air. e'en better to take a diff'rent route. ne'er know what'cher gonna find. i've found that a face mask with a scarf o'er does quite well with keepin' mine from such. ya might try't?
