Some punishments seem a bit excessive

I wrote about Vince going to court for carrying his brother on the bar of his pushbike. It reminded me of an article I read once while in a waiting room at the chiropractor’s. We both had appointments and, while I waited for Vince, I read a trucking magazine, mainly because it happened to be on top of the little table and had an article about trucking cattle for long distances.
One article was about an old driver/mechanic who came out to Australia following World War II. He was a Latvian by birth and his people had a very hard time during the war. The small snippet which particularly caught my attention was when, as a very young adolescent, he told of walking into a store and forgetting to give the Heil Hitler salute. As punishment, he was made to spend six weeks defusing live bombs. I wonder what some of our young delinquents would think of that.
The photo is of part of an old truck that is in the Ravensthorpe museum in Western Australia. Can you see the metal hand which was used to signal that you were turning? If the hand was in a straight line with the metal rod, you were turning right. By pulling a lever, the hand could be pulled at right angles to the rod and meant you were turning left or stopping.

I’ve never seen a truck or any vehicle with this hand feature before.

@Tampa_girl7 Possibly they did. With cars, they just used hand signals but for trucks, I guess these stuck out a bit further.

I think there would be an uproar among the young delinquents if they were forced to defuse live bombs.
I didn't know trucks had those devices on them. I know you needed to use those hand signals before turn signals on cars. I also needed to use them when riding my bike.

Our young generation today will never understand punishments and its reason during our time. Some would say it is abuse but in reality it was for our sake . I can see the photo and to me it was really an old truck.

There are very few rules during wartime. And yes, it is an old truck.

Interesting photo and a VERY interesting story. Yes, our young people would think twice about doing something if they had to diffuse bombs!

that does seem a bit much. Some people today would probably refuse to do that.

@JudyEv no i suspect it was not. although, if you think about a dumb thing to do, someone with ill intent could easily blow the whole building up including all the soldiers.
