With all the great Neil Diamond songs out there, it’s hard to pick just ten. Look at what I didn’t include: “Thank the Lord for the Nighttime,” “Cherry Cherry,” “I’m a Believer,” “Brooklyn Roads,” etc. I know. And, with all those to pick from, here’s the top song on my list of favorites....not a hit! Whodathunkit!
#1: Dry Your Eyes
Oh, yeah baby.
As The Band were breaking up, front man Robbie Robertson was heading in the direction of record producing. In a seemingly unlikely move, he chose to produce Neil Diamond’s Beautiful Noise. While it sounds unconventional, it turned out great.
In celebration of that, Robertson asked Diamond to appear in the farewell concert by The Band, The Last Waltz (which was filmed for a movie and released as a three-album set). People were NOT happy that Diamond was invited, given that his relationship was with Robertson solely, not with The Band. According to Picky Wedia, Neil Young referred to Diamond as Neil Sedaka (c’mon, Neil, you’re in the FON (Fraternity of Neils), how hard is it to get a name right?
), and every other member of The Band balked at Diamond’s appearance.
But he appeared.
And he sang this song.
And it was one of the most memorable moments in the film.
God bless Neil Diamond.
Thanks for reading.

Why, thank you! I enjoyed it, too, and I can’t believe it took this long to get around to celebrating his music.
