Had a Bad Encounter with a Dog

I went outside to say hi to the deer before visiting the graves of Doodles and Kuma, the cats. Hubs asked me to check to see if we received mail. As I walked down our sidewalk and then driveway to the mailbox, my neighbors’ were returning from walking their two newly adopted dogs. The dogs barked their heads off at me. We chatted from our respective driveways shouting above the wild barking. They told me they were working hard on controlling that barking. A suggestion was made by one of the neighbors that perhaps his dog would stop barking once he got used to me. I love dogs and agreed. As this huge barking monster approached on a harness firmly gripped by my neighbor, I put my hand out for it to sniff and said soft, sweet, nothings to it. It lunged at my face and hit me hard on my smiling face, getting me good on my lower lip and upper teeth. No bites, thank goodness. Just head butted. My reflexes were quick. Sigh....... My neighbor is still apologizing. I washed with antibacterial soap and am icing myself now, typing with one finger. And we didn’t receive any mail today.

This wasn't a licky dog. It's a vicious, out of control monster! I sense that I must be careful if I ever encounter him again - or her. Let's just say that I don't need lip fillers.. Thank you! I'll be fine.

@much2say I agree. The dogs are 5 years old and better learn new tricks. I'm never getting close to them again. My lip just stings, but I am fine and lucky I still have my ugly, old face.

@DianneN ' And we didn't received any mail today' I'm sorry you had that unpleasant experience with a dog..since I don't have a dog, I started to be afraid of them and I don't approach them.

Yep, no mail. I've grown up with dogs and had them my entire life until our last one passed away. I let the dog approach me in the way that always used to work. Never again. My lip is throbbing.

@DianneN Be more careful next time, you see that even the owner doesn't know that dog well ... and especially he doesn't know you!

@kanuck1 No, they rescued 2 a little over a month ago and are trying to train them. Not easy when they are 5 years old and you don't know what kind of a sad life they may have had.

They say that when adopting an older dog you should let it acclimate to you and it's new surroundings before attempting to walk it very far. I'm so sorry that happened to you. My friend Carol has 3 dogs, one is a pitbull and she just loves me to pieces but she always wants to french kiss me even if it means head butting me. Hank is working with her to get her to calm down when she sees me.

I didn't know that, but they do take the two dogs for walks around our circle at least twice a day that I have noticed. Thanks. Their dogs are just out of control, and I plan on staying away from them. This looked like a pitbull to me. My brother.owned two at one point, and they were both the sweetest dogs ever.

I like dogs but only if they don't come near me. Here my neighbor's dogs are just like stray. They didn't put leash on them and I never saw them feed their dogs. Maybe that's why the dogs love trash so much. And when I was kid, I got chased a lot by dogs.

Some dogs are so sweet and good, while others are not. Who knows what kind of life these poor dogs had before they were rescued. All I know is that they better keep away from me. They were so vicious. My lips still sting and are swollen.

@DianneN true. Abandoned dogs have trust issue. The abused dogs tend to be wild to defend themselves. I hope you will recover soon.

Glad you didnt get bit. Was it growling at you any? I ask because Duke sometimes does that to me when he gets excited. He has a very hard head. I am sure his is as hard as mine at least. He is saying hi when he does that. I know he does sometimes forget that he is 8- pounds of muscle and taller than I am when he is on his back feet.

@DianneN Then I would watch him very close if you see them out again. Duke has never growled at anyone but I still keep him tightly held when he first meets someone so he dont knock them down at least. We dont get a lot of company so I am not worried about teaching him not too. He knows my signal for stop when he gets too hyper with me. You could make some fast money right now

@DianneN They should be kept very close at least for now. At those ages I would say get a good shock collar to help with the training. I would not trust Duke to come off leash outside. But I have never worked on that with him. When we leave our property his manners are very good without me insisting. It is not his territory so he is different. Since you were not seriously hurt I understand, But I would not give them another break with the dogs.

@wolfgirl569 I intend to, and hope I never see them off their leashes. At least Duke listens to you. I promised them I wouldn’t sue. I hope it never comes to that.

That's not good. It seems the dog is aggressive probably because of the prior owner. The new owners are going to be held liable before long if they continue to take them out in public. If they snap the leash or pull loose, it will be awful. I hope your face heals. Sadly, you may need to carry some pepper spray in case.

I'm sorry you had the bad experience with your neighbors dog. I've only had one bad encounter with a dog. I was cleaning their home and the lady was dying from cancer, at home under hospice care. I think the dog thought I was going to hurt her, though I never went into the room she was in. The man eventually took the dog and put him in the basement. I certainly didn't like hearing the dog growl or show me his teeth. Sorry you didn't have any mail. We got some late Christmas cards. And a bill.

@DianneN I am sorry that happened to you. It is hard to tell why a dog would do that. Where I lived before I had a dog and there was a very very nice family that had a boxer named Lily. She did not like me at all and I never found out why. Every other person she would not bark at and let them pet her but me she would bark at. I never figured out why. I love both dogs and cats and never understood it. The family loved her or still loves her. It really bothered me for a long time and then I forgot about it till this happened to you. I guess I felt hurt because I always thought animals would be my friends because no many humans have not been nice. I did not mean to take away from you what happened to you. I just wanted to share with you my story.

@DianneN So sorry. The two little pomeranians that we adopted had been in an abusive situation. One bit me because he felt he was being backed into a corner. After that we became the best of buds. He just had to get used to us and know that we would never hurt him.
