Can chivalry come off as pretentiousness?

One thing I remembered is being a gentleman with ladies came off as being pretentious for some. Though some women appreciate the chivalrous nature some take it as if the person trying to woo a woman or being fake. It’s a thing of the past but I’m sure there are many men who still follow the chivalry code. What is your take on the opinion ? In this world where feminism thrives can chivalry exist ? (Not referring feminism in a negative sense)

@shankyambasta When I open a door for my wife it looks like I’m being chivalrous but truth is she doesn’t know how to open doors - she just grew up thinking that’s what men do. I do enjoy acting chivalrously, but not in a patronising way, and expecting nothing In return.

Well that’s sounds good. So your wife developed a habit of men opening doors ? Interesting. Yes, chivalry comes from the inside I do not expect anything in return as well but the thought that some women take offence to the mannerism is hurtful. That’s what I opened this discussion for !

I think chivalry is outdated, and can be treated as Quixotic. LOL. That said, there are a few who do not sound pretentious when they do it. There is a french myLotter here, topffer, who is like that. So kinda it is a quality you either have or you do not. Trying to act it is easily discernible.

Well 90% ladies did appreciate it while 10% females with pseudo feminist tendencies said that this looks pretentious. Well I know about pony XD

@ShankyAmbasta Pony is American. Topffer is French. Chivalry kinda oozes out of him, when he is commenting on something that could do with it.
As to women, I would suggest avoid the 90 percent. Today they will let you open the door, tomorrow they will make you clean the toilet and make beds ...while they watch TV.

Didn't the code of chivalry also encourage a male slapping another male in the face with a glove to challenge them to a duel? :p
It really depends on the motivations behind the act. I have had a man be quite chivalrous and then when I didn't put out called me a betch that doesn't know decency when she sees it. It wasn't there so no duh I didnt see it.

Damn ! I don’t think chivalry encouraged the duel thing. It was always a noble behaviour. The warrior code maybe.
Well if a man showed you chivalry and called you that word then maybe he was suffering from dual personality disorder ?
