This afternoon we watched a film called Spread Your Wings, touted as a family adventure. Based on a true story, a techno-addicted teenager is sent to spend holidays with his ornithologist father in southern France. A hatching of endangered lesser white-fronted wild geese raises the problem of preparing them for their first migration.
The birds are taught to follow an ultralight and, after problems encountered with various authorities, the birds make their first successful migration from Norway back to the Camargue, with the teenager flying the ultralight. The acting is superb and the scenery stunning. It’s my favourite of the international films we’ve seen so far.
The photo is of a black swan as I don’t have a photo of a lesser white-fronted goose.

It seems this director has made some very lovely films, often involving children.

I looked up the movie there was a similar movie shot here in Canada that we saw years ago.
That movie was called Fly Away Home, and we enjoyed it quite a bit, we've actually watched it on more then 1 occasion.

Young animals 'imprint' on the first things they see and hear so they had heard the sound of motors from a very young age. A lot of time had been spent getting them used to following humans and to follow a 'honking' sound from a horn. There is an interesting article here about it and it mentions geese and ultralight aircraft.

It sounds like a great film. You don't seem to see black swans that often.

There was another movie like this a few years ago. It was based on a true story and was a great movie and inspiration. If I get the chance may watch this one too.
