Both happy and sad

I was surprised when one of my colleagues got inside our office and said that she wanted to shout while holding her phone. She got an email which was a notice for her promotion. We all both screamed for joy because it was a long-waited result. She applied for the position a year ago and because of the pandemic, things slowed down.
Actually two of them applied for the same position in separate department. We asked our other colleague if he received the same notice. He checked his email but nothing on it. Later on he was called by the School Principal for a short talk. When he came back to our office, he was so sad that he almost cried because he was denied for the position and another person was chosen.
The festive atmosphere suddenly changed and we became so quiet that we didn't know what to say. Honestly, he's a hardworking man and he has been working for that promotion for so long. He even ranked first. But as they say, ranking is not so important because its the approving authority who has the last say.
I feel both happy and sad.
have you ever caught in this kind of situation?

I have. It's really not that fun of a position to be in. It's too bad that your friend didn't get the position he'd been working so hard for. While another person did. If he keeps working hard, he'll receive another opportunity. Perhaps a better one than the one he lost out on.

He really feels down as of this moment and I don't know how long he is going to be like that. And the sad part is I know that there is nothing that we say that can comfort him right now.

It's hard to say how long depression can last. Some people snap out of it pretty quickly, while others take a while. While you're happy for the one, be sure to support the other.@cherigucchi

@kaylachan I think that this is something that he must get over with. Knowing him, I know that he will be able to, he only needs time

If you are in the situation of the one who is promoted while your friend was denied of the position, it would really hard to enjoy while you know someone is sad. I have experienced being left but I don't want them to pity me because I did not make it. That is why I always find other ways to earn that even if I didn't get promoted, I still have enough amount on my pocket. Yes, it's sad that I don't get promoted when I know I am qualified but I won't show other people that it affects me. I always tell them, it's okay, my time will come.

It really feels sad but I know sooner or alter he will be able to accept and cope with it. I just want to stay by his side because I believe he needs friends

I had and I was in the situation too. I applied for a job with my friend but only she got it. Of course I was disappointed. I was desperate for a job at the time. But I wanted to be happy for her. So I put on a brave face and congratulate her. I even make a joke about it.
I wish success for your friend. God might have better planning for him.

I hope he was denied fair and square and not because someone has influence and made under the table. I have always doubt on this because it's no longer the merit of a person that will speak but influence, connection, money are very powerful tools in achieving something.
Good that your other colleague got the rank that she applied for.
