New Work Schedule Begins Today

I’ve worked at 24 hour agencies for the last ~7 years and usually on or near the start of the year, these seniority-based staff do a “work pick”. It will either be a set schedule or a rotating line but you are picking for the entire next work year. My schedule in 2020 was: Saturday 1200-2200, Sunday 1200-2200, Monday 1530-0130, Tuesday 1530-0130, OFF Weds, OFF Thurs, OFF Friday. It did suck working every weekend (unless I could use a vacation day for it) but I had a good crew and I really enjoyed having Fridays off. This year I didn’t have many good options but I am basically moving to the opposite side of the “weekender” schedule at my job- my new schedule (starting today) is as follows: WEDS 1400-0000 THURS 1400-0000 FRI 1630-0230 SAT 1630-0230 SUN, MON & TUES: OFF! Friday & Saturday are so late-but at the same time, I’ll be able to get lots done during the morning and afternoon. And after working over a year of the “overnight” shift- 10pm to 8am- I will never consider anything else “LATE” ever again. Haha! I will say, although at times I miss working a regular work week and consistently having weekends off, here’s what I notice: -Working weekends can be nice (no managers/admin around, casual dress) -Grocery shopping on a Sunday or Saturday is a nightmare- on a Monday or Tuesday I am shopping with all the retirees and it’s great! Also not a lot of kids out and about. -2 weekend days is simply not enough for this one, 3 is optimum! If I had the option of working 12 hour shifts for additional days off, I totally would. I am looking forward to having Sundays off this year and seeing more friends and family. Do you work a weird schedule or anyone else in a 24 hour business as well? Happy Wednesday and wish me luck with the new shift!

I used to work 12 hours shift before, therefore I know how difficult it can be at time. Good luck with your new shift!

Did you enjoy working the 12's? I work 10's and it seems like JUST enough time, although sometimes even 10 hours feels like too much.

@prinzcy I see, that sounds like hard work. I haven't worked normal hours in 7-8 years, so I am used to rotating and generally weird schedules. Lol.

@maezee can't say that I'm enjoying it. The factory was 3 or 4 working days. You work 3 days, 4 hours break. You work 4 days, then it's 3 days break. It's rotating the work days. 12 days in the work hours for each day. OT was also for 12 hours, which was on my break days. It was tiring but the payment was good. So I was not really complaining. I had to quit though as I want to look after my family.
