Wow, what a terrible night for suburban Birmingham. You don’t normally think of January as “tornado season” unless you live in the Deep South. It was ugly. My heart goes out to them. Also in the ways of hearts, here’s another song with “heart” in the title, taking us toward Valentine’s Day.
Hearts of Stone - Blue Ridge Rangers
So how did John Fogerty wind up doing a 50s doo-wop song on an album of country covers released under the pseudonym “The Blue Ridge Rangers”? Beats me!
The song’s origins was with a west-coast doo-wop group called the Jewels (the song was written by two members of the group). From there....
Now, don’t rag on Fogerty for throwing this on a “country covers” album. Red Foley did record it and had a good-sized country hit with it. The biggest hit version was by the Fontaine Sisters (which used generally the same arrangement as the doo-wop version).
Once CCR broke up John Fogerty decided to try to sneak something out into the world, using the band pseudonym. But with a voice as singularly unique as Fogerty’s, who was fooled?!
You may remember the 50s hit version. You may remember Fogerty’s rendition. Or you may have shown up thinking this was the Southside Johnny song. (It isn’t, sorry.) Hang on for a terrific, buried gem!
