Old lady tells manager how to do reviews...

Had a really rotten year last year. Lots of changes, lots of stress, personal and work, and I admit I got grumpy a few times when I was crazy busy trying to keep up and I was constantly getting interrupted with changes and updates when I was just trying to keep up. So I got talked to, and I expected a lousy review. Weirdly, it was mixed. The review was "meets expectations", but the comments were all "behavior, behavior, behavior". So I thought, well, if behavior was SO bad, why did I get a "meets expectations", and if I met expectations, why did he need to mention behavior in like 8 different comment sections. Well, in the modern era, once the review gets submitted, it's carved in stone, no changing it. In the bad old days, if you objected to something and the manager agreed with you, they could change it. Seems pretty bassackwards, but whatever. So I told him a story. You see, about 35 years ago, I wrote up a review for someone who was constantly yakking, at work with co-workers, on the phone with family and friends, etc. And her work was suffering. So we had a talk And when it came time to do her review, I mentioned the chattering like three times. So my manager asked me to change it. "Just mention it once and move on," she said. "Don't bash her over the head. She knows she needs to improve, and you don't need to make her feel worse about herself. Either she'll improve or she won't, and if she doesn't we have other things we can do." So I emailed my current manager the story, and told him that he had basically chosen to bash me over the head, and that I hoped he would take the story to heart and not do that to someone else. Yep, I am an opinionated old lady. I wonder how he took it. I don't suppose I'll ever know since I told him I didn't want a response.

Come to India Dawny. We don't give a damn about behavior. Especially of the lady. Though the guys would cuss you because their egos hurt. They should. They are brought up wrong. And good of you to stand up for yourself. About time.

@dawnald I believe ability to love comes from ability to love self. That becomes a kinda measure to decide I love this person. It is easy to disconnect from others. But not easy to do that with self. Standing up for yourself is part of that. It is worth it. No need to regret that. Only better things await you. Hang in.

I hope your boss takes it in a good way. We all have to learn something every day be it any position. And I am sure you must be trying hard to work on your behaviour.

@dawnald That is good. And I hope your boss also takes it as a good way. I can say for myself that I would have taken it well and introspected.

People who talk a lot while working can disturb others who are trying to get on with their own work, so you did right to point out that she was talking a bit too much.
