An American tragedy,
an old man drowning
In years of misery
His mind often wandering,
Disconnected from reality,
though he was lucid occasionally
There's music echoing through the streets,
and people are rushing by like they're just too busy
The cardboard sign he's holding
says "will work for a meal to eat,
or place to sleep"
No coat on his body,
no shoes on his feet
What a terrible sight to see,
enough to make you weep

I witnessed a lot of homelessness when I lived out in California (an hour from L.A.) years ago.
That's what inspired this, @Janet357

A moving poem.
Homelessness can also take place within a home.
An old man lives with his daughter, for example, who is out working every day. He is left alone to look after himself, and is as bored, and as lonely, probably more so, than if he was on the street, watching people walk past him by.
At least, he has a warm bed to sleep in though.

Excellent. Homelessness is a big problem in America, especially in the warmer climates.

This is some of the scene I see in movies. I think it is more tormenting to see in reality.
