Heart Songs: Hungry Heart

Good morning from sunny, cold, but NO SNOW Alabama! I’m on my way south, running away from that terrible white stuff with sub-freezing temperatures that’s back home. But I have my tablet and my keyboard and my list, meaning you still have to endure another song with “heart” in the title. Hungry Heart - Bruce Springsteen Or, “let’s try to sound 50s-ish,” part one of 6,385,184,207 in the 80s. This was the first single off The River, and it didn’t sound like anything else on the album (except maybe “Sherry Darling,” which also has a cool late 50s vibe to it). But hey, it sold a lot of records! Just having Springsteen’s name on it was enough to sell a lot of records back then. I was way too young for Beatlemania, but I’m thinking mid-80s Springsteen was close. Back in the days of record stores, there were people who camped out in front of record stores the day before the 5-LP live set was released. A station in Lexington devoted the entire day to playing nothing BUT that album. And MTV would play new Springsteen videos (such as Born in the USA’s “I’m on Fire”) every hour, on the hour. And of course, that all got really old really quickly. I’m not a big Springsteen fan (my late lamented friend, comedian Tim Wilson, used to talk about how everyone in New Jersey loves Springsteen, “But every song he ever did is about how New Jersey sucks!” ), but there are some incredible songs in his discography. I wouldn’t go that far with this song, but it’s a good turn it up and sing along tune.
