I just ate a portion of avocado for a late lunch/snack

I ate it the same way I did mid-January, sliced up with everything but the bagel seasoning on top. I've been doing some surveys of customers where I work asking them whether they leave the avocados on their counters until they ripen as many here do or whether they put them straight into the fridge and then let them ripen later. I will say those that leave them out are by far the majority both here in mylot and at my job. I asked several ladies that left them on the counter whether their moms taught them that and the answer was always yes. Well, I was never exposed to them growing up. In fact, I didn't begin eating them until about ten years ago when my sister recommended that I start. I'll have to ask her sometime whether she knows to leave them out until they ripen. It could be that she doesn't know that either. I want to say that I purchased three mid- January. Two I put into the fridge for later and the third I left on the counter. I, personally didn't enjoy that one very much. I think because I've already put them into the fridge first that's the taste I'm used to and I like those better. The one I had a portion of today was the final one of these three that I bought about the fifteenth of January. Recently, I noticed it had started to ripen even being in the fridge. So, today I thought I'd check it out and if it was still a light green, which it was, I'd eat some. Which I did. The image is the one I had today.

I buy the teeny tiny avocados from Trader Joes - that seems to work out for us since I have wasted so many of the bigger ones by forgetting about them. I buy them hard and leave them on the counter until they are almost ripe, then I stick it in the fridge until I can use them. It seems to last pretty long. I would normally buy 1 or 2, just what I need, but I don't go out to grocery shop as often these days.

@MarshaMusselman I forgot to mention 6 teeny tiny avocados come in a bag, and for the price it is worth it. The big ones really do taste the best (Hass) - creamy and oh so delicious, but can be expensive.

Unfortunately I almost live at the grocery store seeing as I work in one. We have the smaller ones too and medium ones and now we have some that are the size of mangos. I hear they are tastier and some think they come from tropical areas.

@much2say dianne buys Haas ones too. I don't know where our store gets ours whether the small, large or extra large ones. They might come from different areas each week since we sell so many.

I had 2 glasses of avocado smoothie yesterday. I don't know much about avocado, I stopped buy avocado because I often get scammed, they said it ripped and delicious but what I get was the unripe and very bitter one. So I just buy the smoothie.

So does the avocado come in smoothie form there or at least mashed up? Our is it in a packet form that you can use whenever?

Our store carries them in various ripening levels. Recently a guy bought ten of them so I asked whether he would leave them in the counter or not. (My counters aren't big enough to have all ten stored there). He said he buys them in various ripening stages so some are ready now others might take a while to be ready.

@MarshaMusselman That is true. I have bought them like that, but left them on the counter to ripen.

I think we've talked about this before. Some people mainly have them in a smoothie or milkshake rather than in salads or on sandwiches.

I think so too plus it was tasty. I don't think it matters whether they are left out first or put right into the fridge it depends on what taste your used to if they really taste different using the different methods.

@CarolDM well that's good to know. Another person who doesn't think I'm nuts for putting them into the fridge too soon.

That's what a few others in mylot have said too. Here is fluctuates a lot in price and people but a lot so I don't think the price affects then too much.

I used to just buy them ripe. Now I have to ask what you mean by light green, the ones here are always dark green.

How funny, I've always seen them as dark green on the grocery shelves and I've been eating them since about 1965 @MarshaMusselman

@rebelann week the outer layer is dark green. I thought you were talking about the inner later of flesh.

I'll take a picture here and share it with you. Usually the darker green means too much air got to the avocado and I've been under the impression that many won't rest then if they are too dark. Like dark green almost brown in color.
