Dream Songs: But It’s a Nice Dream

Okay, if you’re not confused by my music tastes yet, this should do it. When I post country songs I put a “country music warning” up for people who, in the words of Eva Gabor in the Green Acres theme song, “get allergic smelling hay.” Today’s song comes with an “easy listening warning.” And here it is. But It’s a Nice Dream - Dusty Springfield Forgive me. But it is Dusty. This was the theme song to a light comedy that was on cable a lot in the 80s, called Kiss Me Goodbye. It starred Sally Field, James Caan, and Jeff Bridges. Now, with Norma Rae, Sonny Corleone, and THE DUDE in the film, you’d think it’d be great. No. But it is worth seeing the one great line in it (where Bridges’ and Caan’s characters simultaneously tell a woman she is a dumb b**ch....as an aside, Caan has another one great line movie, Comes a Horseman, where his character tells Jane Fonda’s character she has “(testicles) the size of grapefruits.” ) And, despite the incrediblly pop nature of the theme song, which was written by Peter Allen, I do love this tune. You can thank Dusty Springfield for that. She really could sing the telephone book and make it great. “Son of a Preacher Man,” this ain’t. It wasn’t meant to be, either.
