My Senses of Smell and Taste are Back

In November, I am pretty sure I had Covid but was not tested. I was miserable for about three weeks with a fever for two weeks. I lost my sense of smell and taste. Everything tasted like garbage, even water. The other day, I was surprised to smell rye in my loaf of bread. I smelled mint and chocolate in a brownie at a church luncheon. Everything tastes wonderful too. I thought it would never happen but it did. I am so happy. Has anything ever changed the way you sense things? Did it ever come back?

I asked but I would have to drive somewhere and stand in line for hours and maybe not get tested. I was sick and could not do that.

@akalinus We had very few cases till a month back. But now there numbers suddenly started going up in six states.About 70% of our corona positives are from a couple of these six states. The governments there failed miserably to control them. Now they have warned people to follow guidelines if they don't want lockdown declared ithere.Governments in those states are inept and people have ceased to take the chinese virus seriously.

I had a similar experience last week and tested negative for covid. My sense of taste and smell gradually returned over a few days so it must have been some cold-like virus rather than the dreaded covid. I was devastated to lose my sense of taste and smell. The worst thing in the world for me would be for eating and drinking to become a purely functional activity.

@WorDazza It was pretty bad there for a while. So you had Covid? I'm glad that food did not taste yucky to you. Are you okay now?

Yes, I agree. I think that I must drink some water and eat something every day to keep my systems from failing but it is so uninteresting to eat or drink something that tastes horrible.

@akalinus I think I was lucky in that everything just tasted of nothing rather than the taste being altered to something horrible. That has to be the worst!

My brother's friend is positive and he lost his sense of smell and taste even though he has recovered but his waist always hurts when he wakes up and his face is very pale.

@akalinus The sun only helps him a little, he also still needs a multivitamin to maintain his endurance.

Maybe he would start feeling better if you could get him out in the sun and fresh air.

Wow, it only now came back? I thought I had covid a year ago in mid January - that was before we really knew about anything. I don't recall a loss of smell or taste, but I didn't even notice because I totally lost my appetite - didn't eat a thing and could barely hold in water. Glad you got your senses back!!

@akalinus I am completely fine . . . but back then it did take a while to get completely better. I had weird things going on with my vocal chords that continued on through March. Yes, so much was so messed up back then. I'm glad your son recovered well!

@much2say Was that part of Covid? I had a miserable sore throat and it is still a bit hurting sometimes. And my eyes still hurt like blazes.

Are you okay now? My son probably had it in February but they did not test him because he had not been in China lately. They really messed up in the beginning. He was very sick but young and recovered okay.

Yes, pretty much. It does not make you want to eat anything. It just came back very recently.

@Nevena83 The important thing is that it is back now. You never know how thrilling salad dressing is until your taste comes back.

Testing was only for people before they had surgery. I called my doctor and he said not to come in when I have a fever. I was sick but they did not want to see me. They said to call back if I have trouble breathing.

@akalinus My eldest granddaughter went to a friend´s birthday party and upon arriving she discovered that there were more people than what they should have. So the next day she went to be tested and did not come either to my house of to her mother´s for a couple of weeks. Here everyone gets tested if there is a need.

I stayed in bed and prayed a lot too. I had been taking vitamins D, C, and zinc for weeks before and I think that helped the immune system fight it off.

I lost my sense of taste and smell for about a week last year when I had Covid. So far, this time around, I haven't lost any of my senses yet. But then again, I'm only 5 days into this new round of the virus.

Are you saying you had Covid and now have it again? I hope I am reading that wrong. Which other senses are you talking about?

@akalinus Yes, I had Covid beginning March 17 last year, and now I have it again beginning March 7 this year. The only senses I'm referring to right now is taste and smell. I haven't lost those senses yet this time around. I hope Covid doesn't affect any of the other senses, that wouldn't be good at all.

I had mumps years ago and it affected my taste for a week. Happy that good times are back. This virus plays havoc with our body.

Thank you. I'm glad your taste came back. It is not fun eating stuff that has no taste or tastes bad. I never had the mumps and no one in my family ever had mumps. My kids had other stuff but never mumps. Maybe some people are immune.

@Shiva49 I grew up in the southwest. My kids grew up in New York state. I can't explain why no one ever got the mumps. None of my siblings ever did either.

@akalinus That is great that they are back now. It is very hard when without something you are used to that when it comes back you really appreciate it. I have chronic rhinitis so at times do not smell anything and once we had a gas leak and did not smell it but others did and they helped me out with it and someone had to come and fix it.
