How are you "improving yourself"?

I know there are some on MyLot who believe we should be satisfied with "just being" and not worrying about "growing" or "improving ourselves." But I am among those who believe we should never stop "growing." This evening, I have been playing bass guitar along with every tune on my local jazz radio station. I can find "the groove" and learn something new on almost every track. I am finding that some of the best tunes have relatively simple chord progressions. I play along, and learn new things, even as I don't stress myself. Are you satisfied with "just being"? Or do you you always want to grow?

@TheHorse Yes, it is if it results in preaching. King Frederic the Great of Prussia (18th century) said, "Let every man seek heaven in his own fashion." You can pray to the Peacock Angel like the Yazidis in the Middle East for all I care as long as you leave me alone.

Could be. Is that a bad thing?

I like to learn and improve, I am not interested in learning to play music, but I like to improve my cooking skills and also my paintings and crafting.

Yeppers, we all (well, many of us) have particular ares in which we'd like to improve or grow. But "just being" (I sometimes call it being Zen") is wonderful too.

I noticed that simple things can be the best too, especially when it comes to music, but it is not limited to that. I think improving is part of being... and getting worse also is. It's just that time and space are linked: as time passes, change is unavoidable. The rare ingredient that's needed to move forward is motivation, but generally I always want to grow and perhaps help others grow as well.

When I feel "down," my motivation subsides.

I always want to grow but I don't want to do it in a competitive way that puts pressure on me and causes stress. I keep attending webinars, reading, sharing with colleagues and friends on social media to be a better educator and special educator. And I am always learning new things about cooking, gardening and art from Pinterest and YouTube.

It sounds like you are always "moving forward." But if you decided to "chill," that would be OK too.

@TheHorse That's why I said I do it at my pace. I don't want to be competitive and get stressed. I want to enjoy the journey of growing. I am in no hurry and no race. I just love to be in the journey in a relaxed way

In what areas are you trying to "improve" yourself? For me it includes music, academia, and...I dunno.

I never want to make my brain stale . . . I do think learning new things keep us mentally healthy! And right - it doesn't have to be stressful or worrisome to "learn". I am pretty rusty on the piano, but I like to figure out certain songs too. Sometimes I try to figure out the bass riffs - that's pretty fun! Recently I've been having fun with this song:

My late husband used to play guitar. He didn't listen to the radio. He found music on YouTube and would play along. It's funny! He said the same thing about simple chords.

That’s quite an assumption, isn’t it? What makes you think I’m trying to improve myself????

I am always up for a challenge so finally decided to do something about improving my writing and seeing if I could win some writing challenges. I joined the premium for Vocal Media and now I can join their challenges and on top of that for joining I got to cash out instead of waiting for more money to pile up and I can see how I have improved by seeing how my second cash builds up,

Both. I am always looking to grow and improve in any area of my life, but I am also content with myself just as I am. I guess I just learn to be happy no matter what my situation is.

Everyone and everything needs to learn and grow. Growth is life!! We grow physically and to keep up we need to grow mentally and emotionally as well. Music is a great way to grow one's skills but there are so many other ways. Find your own way but don't stop trying to grow!
