A banyan tree gives out aerial roots that travel vertical to the ground creating more plants around it Such a tree exists in India that has created thousands of such trees around it growing into a veritable forest. There are roads running under it and so does traffic. Tourists including me have spent time there picnicking. The image shows the single banyan tree - now a forest.

Is this picture from botanical garden, Kolkata?? I have some fade memory of that huge Banyan tree when I visited it as a child. I was mesmerized.

@allknowing It's the same tree I am talking about. That's in Howrah only. And it's really mesmerizing..I have a faded memory. But such miracles of nature really give you goosebumps.

@allknowing Weeping willow trees do that. The roots will spread out and new ones come up.

It would be lovely to drive under these trees - and even better to picnic under them.
