Teachers aide Patti Graydon was at the right place at the right time when a 10 year old boy Jack Borger who is autistic was eating at the cafeteria at Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School in Islip Terrace New York on Monday.
Jack who cannot speak due to his autism showed signs of choking when his eyes were tearing up.
Patti saw what happened and she assisted Jack to use the Heimlich Maneuver to get the piece of food out of Jack's mouth so he could breathe again.
A nurse came to assist Jack to see if he was okay before he was taken to the Good Samaritan Hospital where he met his parents who received the news from the school principal Janet Jones who took Jack's parents to see their son who was released from the hospital after a few hours.
Jack has been autistic since he was two years old. The way he talks to his parents is by using a typewriter.
Teacher assistants are priceless in assisting children with special needs that in my opinion deserve more praise than are getting now.
