World Autism Awareness Day

Autism spectrum disorder begins in early childhood and eventually causes problems functioning in society socially, in school and at work, for example. Often children show symptoms of autism within the first year. A small number of children appear to develop normally in the first year, and then go through a period of regression between 18 and 24 months of age when they develop autism symptoms. While there is no cure for autism spectrum disorder, early treatment can make a big difference in the lives of many children. I have a friend with an autistic child and she is the sweetest child I have been around in a very long time. Such a sweet disposition. Today is celebrated as World Autism Awareness Day. Every day should celebrate these sweet children and adults. Do you know any autistic children or adults?

Can't say that I do, personally. However, I am aware of the disorder.

@CarolDM Yes, I know. I think Autisim (much like many invisable and mental disorders) don't get the reconizion they deserve, because they can go undiagnosed or over diagnosed.

Yes. My husband’s nephew. When he was 2 years old i noticed that there was something different about him. Told my husband about it but his brother wouldn’t listen saying that it’s just normal for kids to be a bit delayed. However, i insisted and talked to my mother in law. MIL told us to find a doctor and bring the child there. He was diagnosed with autism. It was my MIL who paid for his therapy and now he’s 10 years old. He may not be like the other kids but he’s doing really well. And yes he’s very sweet.

@CarolDM Yes but his father has a really short temper and sometimes the kid would run to us and would tell us he’s homeless. His father hurts him physically. And with a really strong force too. Would even tell him abusive words like idiot no such. Sometimes we bring the kid home and let him stay here for awhile. But he would always go back home saying he misses his dad.

When I was a teacher I participated as a reviewer in the Case Western University Autism study (the one that builds the Autism scale). All of us are on that spectrum a little. But, those well on that spectrum deserves our help and support! good on ya for sharing this!!!!!

Yes, my youngest child is autistic, so is my husband, and some friends/ children of friends. I've also worked with autistic children. My son was diagnosed just before he turned 4 (he's almost 16 now). Most won't get an official diagnosis until after the age of 6. I'm not sure where you learned that children often show symptoms in the first year as this is actually quite unusual/hard to confirm (of course, this could have changed since my son's diagnosis). My son and husband are on the more able end of the spectrum, but most I worked with had severe impairments and would always need care. They were most very lovely children. The one I didn't like was high functioning enough to know he was autistic and to practically state that he could use it to get away with his behaviour (which he knew was wrong). On the other hand, I've had people tell me my child can't be autistic because he doesn't meet their definition of what they think it means.

@CarolDM we manage a relatively normal life! Autism doesn't necessarily equal suffering. There are still challenges, of course, but I feel more for those with more challenging needs.

Year back, I worked with these children, under the direction of a licensed teacher. I was simply an aide, to assist. My niece has a 20 year old boy, Michael is autistic. He refuses any physical touch, from other people for some reason.

Our friend's autistic son is on his own in art college now. Another friend has a severely autistic son who is creative with paper sculpture - an always smiling guy at 22 (he has a younger brother with Aspergers). My daughter's swim instructor said he was autistic . . . he happened to do well in math and swimming (and had the knack to teach). Our old neighbor had a son a little older than my daughter who was severely autistic. We've known many young children with autism too.

I know very little about autism. Our son has gone to school with students who had it and has attempted to try to explain it to me, but I cannot grasp the depth of the affliction.
