The Golden Compass

Last year one of my friends gave some books that she really likes. The books are The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman and other books from the same series. It is a fantasy series. I don't read many fantasy books, but my friend has talked a lot about those books, and I am willing to try something different.
I plan on bringing the books when we go on vacation. I usually read thrillers most of the time. That is my favorite genre, but sometimes I like to read something different.
Have any of you read The Golden Compass? If you like to read: Do you usually stick to the same genre of books or do you read books from many different genres?

My friend talked about the movie. She really wants to watch it, but she hasn't had the chance to do it yet. It is available online, but she has to subscribe to the site in order to watch it.

I look forward to reading it. I don't know the books or the author, but my friend talks a lot about those books.
