Psychological illusionist

Have you seen Derren Brown: The Sacrifice? We just watched it on Netflix and I still have mixed feelings about it. Derren Brown is a hypnotist, a psychological illusionist. He set up an extremely elaborate experiment where, unknown to the subject, he manipulated the man "Phil" to see if he could be convinced to take a bullet for another person. Phil originally had strong feelings against illegal immigration into the US. The producers subjected him to a series of psychological situations to see if they could create enough empathy that Phil would sacrifice his own life for an illegal from Mexico. I won't spoil the ending in case you want to watch it. But it was an extremely frightening experience for him. And I wonder if the effect was helpful or harmful. I may be overreacting, but this type of mind control and psychological influence could be used on a larger scale on a group of citizens and not in a positive way. Phil's experience may have had a good outcome. I don't know. But Big Brother, 1984, Brave New World, and the Antichrist come to mind. What do you think about this?

I have your same feeling, we are "connected" to our electronic devices all the time right now, I am afraid that something like this may happen to influence the masses. I am going to watch The Sacrifice, it is an interesting plot.

It's like the frog in the pot of boiling water. We're slowly being conditioned to give up all our rights.

@1creekgirl You are so right, I like my privacy, my freedom and my security, but too many people seem ready to give up all their rights, it is scary.

I did not see this one. Many minds are slowly being brainwashed. Too sad.

Sounds like a very disturbing premise to me and not something I would feel comfortable with.

As far as I know, it was true and the guy didn't know he was being manipulated, but who knows for sure. If that had been me, I would be furious.

I haven't seen the show you speak of but shows like it show people exactly how easy it is to manipulate our minds.. Have no doubt it has been going on for decades. Look at all the crazy of the last few years, normal minds just don't act the way people have been behaving lately.

I agree there's probably been and still is even more mind manipulation going on. But some of this craziness is just plain evil in people, I think.

I think that's way too creepy! We don't have Netflix anymore; so unfortunately I won't be able to see how it all turns out. So this is nonfiction then and not just a story?

As far as I know, it's true. But not sure if there was some behind the scenes reality show directing.
