A big issue puts smaller ones in the shade. Now that the world is grappling with a pandemic which respects no borders, there has been a change in our agenda, sort of forced upon us. It is survival now compelling a united effort to get back to life as normal as we had known. Is there a united effort to tackle this unwelcome visitor? It looks more like politics still holds sway over decision making though we look to be moving towards the right path. It is a fight with our backs against the wall for many countries. We have opened a can of worms and now left to figure out a solution, sort of a leap in the dark, it looks like. It is over three million deaths and still counting. The situation is numbing but some questions remain. What is the origin, cause, of this pandemic, and did we ever foresee or were ready to face it? How it will play out in the end is another question mark. For the time being, those alive have to adjust to a new reality shorn of the carefree lifestyle that we took for granted. I feel a sense of loss not only for the lives lost but also the emptiness that pervades in our minds and the physical plane. What are your thoughts on the new reality that has taken over us? Here, it is also lawlessness that has now become the bedrock. No more civilization. It is indeed the wild wild west being forced.

This pandemic has brought into sharp focus the fact we are one species - sink or swim as one. Our tails are on fire in many, especially poor, countries. All the progress in science and technology will prove worthless if we do not grow in wisdom and become better human beings.

This emptiness is so heavy and hurting And now the news that it was a bioweapon that's making round makes me feel so livid and helpless. Why a biological war to be a world power? A big shame for humanity if what's coming out of closet has some truth. I thought Hiroshima and Nagasaki were enough to put Humanity to shame for all coming generations. A war that ended in such ruthless way by a power drunk nation of that time that paralyzed human for generations. And now this story of biological warfare.... Humanity can't stoop lower than this

Well said. As long as we have little knowledge about the origins of this virus, our response too will be a leap in the dark. Looks like the place where it originated is now on a home run while others are running helter-skelter. If some had thoughts about weaponizing the virus as is reported, then that really shows how low we can stoop to destroy what our creator has given us and nurtured the whole planet. There cannot be a more ungrateful species ever in the whole creative process. What for all these weapons and to be used against who? We are one species and we have no right even to kill another creature, come to think of it, as they too have a right to live.

@arunima25 Ultimately the powerful succumb to ego, greed, and selfishness. It is said the tree that has the most fruits is the one that bends towards the ground. That shows those who really serve are humble. No one can destroy us except us only due to our hubris and unbridled greed, following a path leading to our doom. History repeats increasingly with a vengeance.

@Shiva49 Now more and more news reports are coming forward from various countries and many countries are coming together and demanding for a thorough probe. And it should be. If China has done it, it should be punished. And humanity is really ashamed. They have stooped a new low, even lower than the incidents of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

Man knew that the virus is the single infective agent that could put an end to man's dominion over earth and other species. China, in its hunger for world domination, did use the virus as a biowarfare. Inadvertently, the virus leaked in Wuhan first. Did we see pandemic coming? The prophecies did forewarn us albeit this pandemia is man-made. China would resort to nothing less but sinister. The statistics could tally up the numbers much later, the world is yet to overcome the disease. And yet, amidst all the wailing and the whining as families lose their loved ones, there is a shocking truth that the other half of this specie called man, is utterly in denial of the pandemic. Worse, demagogues who are ill-equipped to solve the health crisis, even has the propensity to sow discontent via false claims. The side-effects of the pandemia not only include depression due to cabin fever but also civil unrest due to repressed conflicts. As we see now Israeli versus Palestinians in the Gaza, Colombians going berserk, Afghan school girls being massacred by their own patriarchs, etcetera, ecetera. The pandemia was meant to be. Lives has been lost and life has been altered from the 'carefree' and complacent attitude. In a way, when man was put on necessary lockdown, this person was glad to see the elephants and the ducks and the monkeys on the streets. The whales and the dolphins emerged and enjoyed the surface of the oceans. It was a sight to see a bear checking on a home because it was missing its human. The skies has become bluer. I only need to see and hear the children and the teens enjoying the sun. That would be normalcy to me already. NB: Good discussion.

@Shiva49 Right up there on the world map, the Israelis and the Palestinians are currently firing rockets at each other. Children did lose their lives. The reign of evil has been upon the world for sometime now. But many a brave men are fighting, making a stand for the good. Like you. You didn't just go quietly into the night, you raised your voice and panned attention to what is happening. You are not allowing evil to triumph. You are putting a stop to it. Many others also such as Navaley in Moscow, the Gen Zee in Myanmar, the Black Lives Matter in America, etcetera. More than half of the Americans stood up against POTUS 45. They won. 'Can we break out of this rut?' Of course. After the Dark Ages came the Renaissance.

Thanks for your detailed well-crafted response. I would say the common folks are the same everywhere but the very few dictate their evil agenda. The most highly rewarding business is the arms trade, and some sell to all and sundry. Wars are triggered by the greed of a few and the common folks are forced to kill each other. When we leave behind everything here, what use fighting for a piece of territory far away from us? It is time the majority rose as one and told the warmongers - go and fight for yourself and leave us in peace! There is too much unsaid about this virus because a powerful country is involved. I recall your President's words too a couple of years ago that China is too powerful to take on even if they are belligerent in the South China Sea. Live and let others live is a nice theme to reflect on but we are nowhere near to achieving that ideal and few tell us to dream on. I recall Einstein's words “I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones,” I do hope it would never come to that. Present times are a clarion call for us to get our house in order.

@eileenleyva Yes, the devil in us is waiting to take over our agenda. "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing," said Edmund Burke. It is said we get the leaders we deserve but politics is a cesspool monopolized by those without conscience. Soon it is self-survival for them drunk with power and position. We allow tyrants to have free play and there are no dearths of sycophants at their beck and call. The common citizens feel helpless. Those who promise change soon prove worse than their predecessors. Gandhi said it so well: “The world has enough for everyone's need, but not enough for everyone's greed.” We see all the time "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely". "The love of money is the root of all evil". And the vast majority bear the brunt of the evil doings of the few - unless we alter this reality, we will forever be enslaved by a few evil who dictate our agenda, make us fight each other, using us as tools and pawns in their political games. Can we break out of this rut?

For me, the reality hasn't changed all that much. Politics continues to play a huge role in how people act and think. I live in a generation of people who were not raised to think for themselves. You believe what the media tells you, because you don't or won't take the time to understand the science behind medicine. And, how this virus, is somehow rewriting science? You don't question what you see and assume it to be fact, or you're afraid of what? A virus? A fine? I grew up being tought how germs and viruses work. I grew up asking questions. If you look at what you've been told to do, how much of it are things your parents tried to tell you as kids, that you ignored? You allow numbers to scare you, but do you know where those numbers come from? How data is collected? How vaccines are made and the process in which it takes for them to be considered safe and approved? Not authorized, but approved. Do you know the difference between authorized and approved?

What I had highlighted was the number of deaths that show no abatement in many countries. Maybe, that data is understated too in most countries. This is a world crisis with some countries reeling from its effects. They do not have health care facilities to accommodate this type of pandemic. This came out the blue catching them unawares. Of course, the vaccines are a hurried job but they have proved quite effective in the circumstances to contain the spread where they have been administered to the majority of people. However, it would take a long time for many countries and in the meantime, people are dying. To bring this pandemic under control, it would require commitment and unity on a higher scale. The sooner we can put this behind the better it will be for the whole world as no country can be an island in the long run.

Yes, lots of positives I see around too like the young volunteers pitching in having applications to help those in need of oxygen, ICU beds, getting vaccination slots for the elderly. And the health care workers and police forces risking their lives to save other lives. The good rise to the occasion always and make our lives worth living even during overwhelming tough times like now.

Yes, this pandemic has forced on us a new perspective away from our earlier preoccupations and taking things for granted. I feel we are forced to make course corrections by a higher force that is in overall control over our destiny.

I read about your country every day (India) and feel awful at what is happening. I'm not sure what caused the virus, but I am sure that with hope and the vaccines including new medicines, we will come out of this and live a new normal. We will get through this!!!

Though we may still be groping in the dak, there have been silver linings too with the health workers rising to the occasion risking their lives to help others in distress. The extent and range of this virus are unparalleled with the health system unable to cope. Yes, this too shall pass.

"We must bring unity of spirit and purpose and condemn hatred and division wherever we see it." Would anyone believe that a Politician said this: George Osborne, a British Pollie. We should try to condemn greed, and one-up-man-ship too, and maintain a unity of love.

@innertalks Yes, as Gandhi said so poignantly “An eye for an eye will leave the whole world blind.” “The world has enough for everyone's need, but not enough for everyone's greed.” is another of his.

Yes, Steve, the writing is loud and clear on the wall and has been there from the very beginning of mankind. United we stand, divided we fall, but the bloated ego and greed of a few have spoiled the lot.
