PART ONE - Saw my Poppy (Grandfather) at the hospital tonight....

As some of you know, my Poppy (my Grandfather, not my dad) is in hospital. I believe it's been 16 or 17 days in total since he has been there. From my understanding, the first reason he went there was due to complications with the medication he takes for his Angina. He is no longer on it. Then the reason he went back was due to a stomach bug he had and he had it really bad. I will spare you the details. He was in a basic ward, was moved to Palliative Care, now back somewhere else. Not all that long ago my Poppy wasn't eating at all. He kept on taking out his IV drip. And doctors just kept saying things like "Last stages of dementia" to "He is really going downhill" and talks to my Nanny about whether to "Bring him home to sleep." We (family) are very confused on where this is going as my Poppy has some OK days and other days not good at all. Meaning, he has days where he isn't eating at all and looks awful and non responsive yet other days he is eating a decent amount and looking a bit brighter. Going to make a Part Two to this as I don't want to make it long. Part Two:
Sorry to make a part two, it's just easier as I hate making long posts. Anyway, continuing on, my dad and I went to see Poppy tonight in the hospital. My...

Unfortunately this is exactly what dementia is. Some days they look perfectly fine and some days they are confused, they do not eat or sleep and they can also become pretty aggressive.

@LadyDuck That is all very true. Thankfully, the aggressive part has been rare. I am sorry if I am repeating myself as I don't remember who I told, but I know there was one point last year or year before, my Nanny said he was awake for about 16 hours holding a crowbar in his hands, walking around the house a lot and was very angry. He didn't remember that happening. Thank you for being there Anna.

@VivaLaDani13 Your poor Nanny had to be scared during that episode. I hope your Poppy can recover or at least do not have aggressive moments. Take care.

@LadyDuck Oddly enough, she told me she wasn't. But I cannot confirm or deny if that was truthful. I know she's been through a lot and has been a very strong woman but unsure if that scared her. I know I would have been scared! Thank you.

@thelme55 Thank you kindly. From what I understand, and from what he has said, he is in no pain and I hope that continues. I'd hate for him to be in pain.

This sounds like textbook dementia in my opinion. Enjoy the moments you can with him.

@CarolDM Thank you so very kindly. It is definitely dementia. We all know this but we make sure we don't say those words to him. I know he will probably forget he was told but we don't want even those few moments of him feeling sad about it. We just say "It's ok to be confused. You're ok." Or something similar so it's nothing too frightening for him.

As others have said, it does sound like dementia - my FIL was a lot like this. Thinking of you and the family .

@much2say Thank you very kindly. Yes it is dementia. He has had it for quite some years now. That is what I am saying, it's sad because he is getting worse. It's very bad recently. It's sad. So sorry you're father in law had it too! It's a sad thing for victims and for loved ones to see.
