Do you swear when you’re alone?

I don’t often swear, but I noticed a while ago that I only swear when other people are around. That seemed kind of odd in a way, you might think it would be the opposite. I sometimes swear when I’m talking about something that makes me mad - obviously I don’t do that when I’m by myself because I normally need someone to talk to! But as far as swearing when something happens - like dropping a hammer on a toe or losing a tiny screw in some inaccessible place - when I’m on my own I usually don’t say anything, I just get on with addressing the problem. But when other people are around I might utter some exclamation (my favourite for relatively minor problems is ‘Bother!’) or swear for worse things - and I realised that this must be sub-conscious attention-seeking, so that someone will notice my problem and sympathise! When things go badly wrong I do, but as a rule I try to avoid and save it for those special occasions when it is really needed!

Same here - mostly I just opt for 'Bother' in the style of Winnie the Pooh!

@Fleura I have several alternatives that I got from TV and books. Strangely, I can't think of any offhand, but they spring to mind when the occasion calls for one!

Hi. I swear a lot. I don't mean to, but it just comes out. Being with people or alone, just comes out. Sometimes in-joke sometimes when I am mad, it comes out. Sometimes it feels like I have no control over that now anymore.

@Fleura It definitely is. It's like now being corporated in everyday sentences as well.

I'll admit that I will occasionally swear, although I am trying to not swear too much.

I only swear when no one is around. I am used to do that as I don't want to influence the young ones. Also, no one swear in front of others in my house. My mom would wash our mouth with soap

I expected that was what I did as well, but I found it was the opposite!

I have a self policy to avoid swearing since I have one teen at home. I only swear when I suffer an injury to my foot when I step on a sticker on the grass or smash my foot on the metal part of the bed mattress.

You are doing well; ironically, more often than not it is the children who cause the swearing for me. As in 'put that bloody phone away!'

I seldom swear because I don't like hearing someone swearing. I must be very angry or I have hurt myself that I swear loudly.

That's like me I think, although I realised that I normally don't even do that if there is no-one to hear me!

@Fleura I can’t remember if I have swear in front of other people. I don’t think I have.

I rarely talk out loud when I'm alone, unless I'm talking to the cats. I might catch myself spewing out the F-bomb occassionally when I'm having one of those days. as in what the Eff... So depending on my mood, I think I need to swear alone or not to release tension.

Swearing is something that I’m never ever comfortable with. When we were kids we would hear our cousins do that and as kids sometimes we would imitate them, but our mom was very strict about it that she would slap our mouths when she would hear us utter a single word. Don’t speak bad words, was what was instilled in our minds. That doesn’t mean i never do it at all. When i am early angry at someone, i do swear but that is rarely happens too.

That is good, it certainly isn't nice to swear a lot of the time.

Alone or with others, I probably swear too much. The army made me do it.

I use substitute words like shoot, friggin, or darn. I don’t like to curse.

I swear like a sailor, people around or not. And if I drop a hammer on my toe you can bet the neighbors will get a very nasty little earful. lol
