Hooray for Motown! I’m celebrating the great R&B label (family of labels, actually) all month long, thanks to a suggestion from @Dena91 . Part three of the salute is the great Marvin Gaye. Unlike Stevie Wonder, I do expect a lot of shrugs or stares from this top ten, given that Marvin was more pure soul and didn’t cross over as widely as Stevie did. Most people who remember Gaye today just know his tragic death: shot to death by his father the day before his 45th birthday in 1984. But oh, the music from this great! “Let’s get it on” with the countdown!
#10: Baby Don’t You Do it
Now, having said all that about Gaye being “forgotten,” you may recognize a lot of these songs....by cover versions from others! Here we have a song that was covered by both The Band and The Who.
Written by the Motown hit machine Holland/Dozier/Holland, Gaye made this song painful and soulful simultaneously.
Great for dancing or heartbreak!

Hmm....I’m wondering if you’ll know any of these. Maybe one, and because of the cover.
