Ooh, look, my McAlister’s is back to full capacity!! AND they have the sweetener out so I don’t have to ask for it!!!! NORMALCY! I’m still wearing a mask, though, because I’m still showing antibodies so I can’t get vaccinated for at least two more months. What does that have to do with today’s Motown song from Marvin Gaye? It’s an appropriate title, I think....
#7: Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing (With Tammi Terrell)
Yeah, things are getting back to real!
Marvin was not only a great singer on his own, he scored a number of duet hits with Kim Weston, and later, Tammi Terrell.
Now, if you think Gaye’s life was tragic, how about Tammi? As a teenager, she became involved with James Brown, who wasn’t exactly a gentleman (reports are he beat her regularly and savagely). And in 1967, while performing onstage with Gaye, she collapsed. The doctors found a malignant brain tumor.
Although she could record more music, she wasn’t the same, and she died from brain cancer in 1970. She was just 24 years old.
Marvin delivered a eulogy at her funeral.
What could’ve been. But at least we have what was, and that was GREAT music.
