Sigh, the joys of apartment living

I spent a lot of years living in my own home until it burned down, then I spent three years living with my boyfriend/husband in his house. That ended when he passed away. Various things caused me to move to town and into an apartment. That was a strange change to put it mildly!!!! There are a lot of changes you need to adjust to when you move into an apartment. One of the biggest is that you call the manager for things to be repaired. I have had two things that needed repairs. One is the window rollers that manage the opening and closing of the windows and keeping the window open or closed and the other is the dead bolt for keeping the door locked when you're not home. Well I have to call again on Tuesday for both things to be repaired again as they aren't working. The window in the dining area where I do my sewing doesn't stay open. I have to block it open so that I get fresh air. I don't dare open it and depend on it to stay open as Petey my orange tabby likes to sit in the window and look outside. I don't want to chance having the window come flying down and smashing his head in the jam and killing him....the manager wouldn't like my reaction as Petey is one of my therapy cats and is registered as such. The door doesn't lock, so I have a card table blocking it closed at night. If someone opens the door the crash from the card table coming down when the person opens the door would have the complex standing up and saluting. It would have me grabbing my baseball bat and going after the idiot that opened the door...and I would be playing ball with the person's family jewels. It is the managements responsibility to provide a safe place to reside. I called last week about the window and nothing happened, I told them I didn't want the same moron working on the window that repaired it the last time as I want it totally and completely fixed. The same goes for the door when I call this time about it. Does your apartment manager make sure that your repairs are done properly and completely and to the proper standards or are they done half............way?

Get everything in writting. I've lived in three different apartments over the span of 15 years before my husband and I bought our first house. Each complex is different. Some apartment managers are good about repairs, while others slack off to save money. Seems that you're dealing with a slacker. And, that's why you must get everything in writting. Ensure you have a copy of every request you made, number of times you've called, when ... everything. Document everything.

I live in my own house. But I had such problems when I went for 2 weeks to a resort other than mine for vacations. Nothing to do with the resort where I have my timeshare.

I have to repair everything myself since I own my own house.

I am, thankfully, in a single family home. Even then my neighbors seem to be too close in proximity. I couldn't begin to imagine living in an apartment again.

@BearArtistLady Apartment living does have it's advantage for some. I remember your teddy bears. I am sure you will adjust soon.

@HazySue Thank you for putting the smile on my face this morning! I'm still recovering from the shopping trip with a friend of mine....she's a bit overweight and has to use a walker so I get to lift everything. I have had serious back injuries so doing ALL the lifting leaves me in pain for a week or better. I'm still making the teddy bears. I have one that I'm working on that is recycled from a lady's black jacket that was machine embroidered. I only have the paws left to machine sew and it will be ready to joint and stuff and finish. I'll post a picture of it on the lot for you to see. I'm hoping she'll turn out good. I'm slowly adjusting, it's kind of hard without the deer to feed in the morning and evening and the yard work during the day. The cats are pretty much self sufficient except for cleaning the litter box which I do in the am/pm. Being less active is the pits and hard to adjust to. Just taking a walk doesn't cut it. I have a potted plant garden in the "studio" but it doesn't yield tomatoes and other food stuffs. (I don't call it a livingroom..it isn't big enough for making bears and an area for a chair, sofa and television plus shelves of fur for bears and an area for stuffing bears) Anyhow, thank you so much for my morning smile...it really helped. Now if the pain pill will kick in I'll get to work on the bears in the sewing area. I need to get sewing so I can cut out....I've got more fur coming in this week and next.

What's hysterical is my apartment neighbors are quiet as little mice 24/7 it's the neighbors that are good and loud. They play their stereo's too loud, allow their dog to bark after 10 p.m., their kids are good and rowdy late at night and the list goes on. It is nice living in an apartment in town. My home was 50 miles from the nearest town so if I ran out of something I didn't go to town just to replace the one item. Living in town I can get what I need without any problems. Today later I'm going down the street to get a tall book shelf unit for my bedroom...it's a five minute trip one way. Plus I also have to add that my neighbors are total sweethearts. I've been in the apartment a few months and am still trying to get it adjusted to fit my lifestyle....it's very different than living in a house. I think I found the right combination and can get back to my way of living that I had in the house. I needed to adjust it to fit the artist style of living (I design and make teddy bears) rather than an old lady who does nothing style of living. I'm making it, finally.

I haven't ever lived in an apartment. I did, for about a year or so, rent a single wide trailer before marry Mike and buying our home. I did have to get the landlord to replace the water heater as it stopped working. I hope you get both the window and the lock fixed correctly this time.

Water heaters are very important parts of day to day living and landlords are happy to replace them quickly. They aren't quite as happy about windows and door locks. They are more involved. Also I don't want them working in my place without me here because I have cats and I don't want them being lazy and leaving the door open so the cats can get out. The cats are certified therapy cats and are expensive cats if they are lost or killed. (I live close to a busy street...it used to be a freeway) It would be nice if my door locked properly consistently. Here's hoping. Thank you for your hopes.

Before PG&E burned down my home I was responsible for all my repairs. It was a piece of cake for me to do them. But living in the apartment the lease states that I'm NOT to deal with repairs that are attached to the building like the windows and the door locks. One of the repair men is a real slacker and I've learned from the other residents to NOT ask for him to do the repairs, he'll get the job half finished and say "there, it's done" and leave. I figure that I'll call the maintenance office and tell them not to bother, that it's okay if someone breaks in, that it's very easy for them to break in that ***** fixed it the last time and it didn't stay fixed and it's okay even if someone breaks in and robs me blind. The landlord or manager will be liable and I wonder how fast it will be fixed properly.
